Plainview is a town in Lampasas County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,564 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The town was named for James Plainview, an early settler and pioneer. Plainview began as a small community on the banks of Buffalo Bayou in what is now Lampasas County. The first post office in plainview opened on December 21, 1872. The townsite was platted by John A. Strother and others in 1874; it became a county seat in 1880. In 1907, voters approved annexation by Dallas. By 1920, the population had grown to 2,500 and the name change to PlainVIEW men's club on July 15 that year because of its similarity to "plain view" from a military perspective during World War I (the first American war with air bombardment). In November 1922, citizens of Dallas raised money to build a new high school west of downtownDallas which would serve as PlainVIEW's second high school afterDallas High School (now MacArthur High School) which had been built two years earlier near Farmers Branch . Because it was not within city limits at that time PlainVIEW residents voted to annex themselves into Dallas on November 13th 1922 making their local government independent from that of Dallas City Council . As Texans moved away from agriculture towards more urban lifestyles during the Depression era there were few jobs available for farmers so farming ceased operation around PlainVIEW around 1935 leaving many people homeless when their land dried up due to lack of rain or other events outside their control like floods etc . After World War II ended most farmers returned but some continued operations until they left again during the economic recession that started around 2008–2009%.
