The Navy has a rich history in Plainview,Texas. The USS Constitution was launched here on October 12,1897 and served as the flagship of the Texas Naval Militia during World War I. General James Wilkinson commanded the White House Sailing Fleet from this ship while President William McKinley toured the fleet at Corpus Christi Bay on December 5, 1901. In 1922, Rear Admiral John Mears commissioned USS Lexington to commemorate World War I veteran Commodore George Dewey’s return to duty with the navy after serving in Japan. The USS Lexington was decommissioned in 1970 and used as a training vessel until 1984 when she was donated to the navy and renamed USS Midway (CV-41). She is currently docked at Corpus Christi Bay. In 1933, Rear Admiral Isadore Strauss became Commandant of Naval Schools in Texas and directed naval construction programs for Plainview. He also helped found the Community Maritime Association which serves as a non-profit organization that supports civic organizations throughout San Antonio County. From 1939-1942, Vice Admiral Eben Sink led Destroyer Squadron Eight (DesRon 8) which operated out of HMCS Victoria from Pier 11 in downtown San Antonio. As vice admiral he also supervised all destroyer operations afloat including exercises off Samar Island and Ulithi Atoll. Plainview, Texas is a small town in Rusk County, Texas located about 20 miles northwest of Dallas. The population was 1,582 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Richardson-Fort Worth Metroplex. The first settler in Plainview was John Hance in 1868. A post office called PlainVIEW was established in 1877 and remained In operation until 1907. The community name has been changed many times but it has always referred to as "Plainview". Ornamental gardens were started by Mrs. Rufus Sherman in 1896 and continued by her son, Drury Sherman until his death in 1937. They are still managed by descendants today. In 1916, Jock Mahony opened his own grocery store which became one of the most popular places to buy groceries in Plainview until he closed shop in 1978. In 1955, Clear Lake Dam burst and destroyed much of the town including much of the orchard that Mrs. Sherman had started years earlier with help from her son Drury Sherman III (Jock's grandson). The community rebuilt slowly but surely and today there are few if any reminders that Clear Lake existed at all other than some historical markers and a plaque on Main Street honoring Mrs Shermans contributions to Plainview

Plainview is a small town in south-central Texas, about 25 miles (40 km) west of Amarillo and 30 miles (48 km) east of Wichita Falls. It was founded by farmers in 1881 as a farming community on the edge of the Llano Estacado National Wildlife Refuge. The name means "plain or open land." The Plainview real estate boom of the early 1800s generated significant economic development in the town. The first white settler, James Young, arrived in 1827 and platted what is now the eastern edge of town on a tract of land that he purchased from the Tejon Indian tribe. By 1830, there were twenty-six residents living in Plainview. The population grew rapidly during the 1830s due to waves of immigration from Europe and England, as well as natural growth resulting from land grants given to settlers by President James K. Polk in 1846. During this time, business activity was centered around farming and livestock trading; however, industry began to develop shortly thereafter with the opening of a bank and several businesses started up in 1851 including a blacksmith shop and a shoe store. By 1860, there were over 100 residents living in Plainview with some 5 businesses active. One major event that occurred during this time was rifle warfare between Texas Rangers and Comanche raiders which left many dead or wounded on both sides. This led to increased trade throughout Plainview with goods brought in by traders traveling through Mexico City or New Mexico Territory at this time unable to be transported further east due to then-high postage rates enforced by U.S.] Postal Service
