Plainview is a small town in the Texas Hill Country. The population was 4,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Corpus Christi–San Antonio Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community lies on the banks of the Colorado River, about 20 miles (30 km) south of downtown Corpus Christi and 110 miles (175 km) north of Austin. It was founded by Mormons in 1878 as aCachexia colony after they became stranded on an isolated ranch near present-day Plainview while exploring what would become Texas. In 1901, Mormons set up a store and post office in Plainview. They named it after their leader, President Brigham Young's brother-in-law Zebedee Coltrane, who had been president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1848 to 1850 and again from 1877 to 1888. After Coltrane's death in 1902, his widow donated land for a school and church complex that were completed in 1904. The community grew rapidly during World War II; when the United States entered the war on April 12, 1941, residents had pooled their money to open private stores and bake products for military troops stationed nearby at San Pedro Bayou Naval Air Station and Fort Sam Houston Timber yards east of town. In 1945, with atomic bombing raids becoming more frequent over Corpus Christi County, Plainview built its first fire station to help deal with concerns about radiation exposure among local residents living near Trinity College (later UTEP). By 1960 plainview had outgrown its small town limits and began annexing adjacent unincorporated areas until it reached its current size—4 square miles—on December 1st 1970. In recent years there have been several attempts by PlainVIEWians to get independence from corpus christi; this has never come fully fruition though some actions such as holding referendums or hosting talks have gained support from parts of corpus CHRISTI including Mayor Cuellar who even stated he’d vote yes if put before councilors but I cannot do anything because I am mayor
