The Plainview Army National Guard Armory was once a vital part of the town’s infrastructure. It served as the armory for the town’s military, and it also housed the town’s arsenal. The first armory in Plainview was built in 1875, and it served as a garrison for the army until World War II. The structure was later used as an ammunition depot. After the war, the armory was converted into a municipal building. In 1958, it was sold to Plainview Municipal Authority and became part of the authority’s library system. In 1984, it was transferred back to Plainview Municipal Authority and became part of the authority’s police department. Finally, in 1995, it was donated to Texas A&M University-Commerce School of Defense Studies in order to be used as an academic research center for defense studies. Since its inception, the armory has been home to many notable people who have had an impact on Plainviewtown life. Some of these individuals include Generals George Custer and Ulysses S. Grant; Mayor John D. Rockefeller; Lieutenant Colonel John Jumper; Major General James Hance; Captain Leonard Wainwright; Rear Admiral Harry Elmore Barnes Jr.; Major General Arnold Eberstadt; Lieutenant Colonel Clifford Berryhill et al.; Drayton Brougham (1868-1941); Commodore Perry (1848-1904); President Franklin D Roosevelt (1912-1945); and Admiral Chester Nimitz (1920-1964). In addition to its Ramirez Museum which is open every day from 9 am to 5 pm from April through October inclusive, there is also a Historical Interpretive Center which hosts events such as exhibits on local militias during World War I through World War II or black history in Plainview during Reconstruction period between 1865 - 1879 inclusive
