Pharr, Texas is a small town located in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It takes its name from José F. Pharr who purchased the land in 1836 and built the first school in what is now Pharr. The town developed until around World War II when it declined because of prohibition and other economic problems. In recent years, however, Pharr has become a cultural and educational center for the region. The city of Pharr began as a trading post on the banks of the White River between 1836 and 1840 by José Félix Pharr Jr., an entrepreneur who also founded Lubbock and Abilenechrome Refineries near present-day Wichita Falls in 1849. By 1865, only 54 people lived in Pharr; by 1870 it had grown to 223 with tanneries (the first in Texas), flour mills, sawmills, cattle ranches (the largest in Hudspeth County), two churches (one religious and one non-religious), six hotels/motels (including four that were destroyed by fire during Prohibition), three stores/grocery stores/takeout restaurants (), sevenlegraph boxes (), five schools (), two churches () Nacogdoches Trading Post (); Shreveport's First Baptist Church (); Pecos' Second Baptist Church (). After being approved for incorporation on November 14th of that year (), business operations rapidly expanded with construction of up to 12 additional buildings including a hospital (1907) and library (). By 1924 there were 527 residents; by 1930 there were 1,314 inhabitants (). A post office was established at Pharr on February 17th of that year (). In 1937 Driggs Womack became bishopric president () after becoming pastor at Houston’s First Baptist Church (). He served until his death on October 8th of that year (). On May 15th of 1938 Driggs Womack was consecrated Bishop of San Antonio de Bexar () after taking possession of his newly created see from Francisco Ximenez Romero y Cisneros which he had been elected to on April 20th following an election decided by episcopal conference held at Austin’s First Presbyterian Church . Bishop Womack resided in San Antonio until his resignation effective December 3rd following another church scandal where four priests accused him of sexual assault dating back to 1954 . On January 16th 1940 Pope Street Missionary Baptist Church , which stood across from today's City Hall building services as an Episcopal mission since 1925 before moving into its present location adjacent to Uptown Park . From 1945 through 1966 St John's Episcopal Cathedral served as Interdenominational Christian Center for Education within then Dallas Independent School District ). Many businesses closed during this time such as Armour & Coats Ltd., Joplin Rubber Company (), Gulftex Corporation (), Texaco Incorporated ()) but many others such as Beaumont Plastics Company(), Cotton Bowl Carpeting Company()) thrived due to postwar suburbanization along I-10 corridor while downtown experienced significant redevelopment spearheaded by Mayor Coke Brown
