Pharr is a small town located in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,846 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1871 by Scotsmen who had come to West Texas as cattle farmers. They named their new settlement for Capt. John Pharr, a veteran of the Mexican–American War and one of the first settlers in Hudspeth County. The town grew rapidly during the late 19th century and soon became a popular stop on wagon roads traveling between Dallas and San Antonio. By 1910, Pharr had become an important center for cotton farming and ranching in Hudspeth County. A local millinery business developed around 1912 and produced hats, gloves, coats, etc., for local residents and businesses. In 1923, Pharr became home to its first high school when East Central High School opened in nearby Georgetown; it was later renamed Austin- Round Rock High School before becoming Austin's second high school (the original being Southwestern High School). During World War II, many Pharrians served in the American military including several who were drafted into service at Fort Worth Army Air Base where they flew B-17s; some also served as soldiers on Iwo Jima during World War II. Pharr was founded in 1836 by J.W. Post and the Post family. The town of Pharr grew up around the post office, which became a commercial center for farming and ranching. In later years, Pharr became a major cultural and educational center for the region. The first school in Pharr was built in 1839, and after two years it burned down. A new school was built in 1840 and it remained in use until 1951 when it was replaced by the present day Kountze School building. The first library in Pharr was built in 1841, and it remains operational to this day. After becoming an agricultural center, Pharr began to become a manufacturing center as well. By 1860, there were four businesses in Pharr with a total production value of $5 million! In 1893, during the period of Reconstruction following the American Civil War, Pharr became known as "the most black town north of Dallas." This appellation came about because African Americans had disproportionate representation within local government at that time; they constituted only 8% of the population but made up 30% of all business owners or workers! During World War II, much effort went into developing materials for aircraft production at nearby Arlington Airport; however, little attention was given to creating jobs for native Texans who would have been needed on-site. When war ended and reconstruction began, many military members left Texas for various reasons such as racism or practical considerations (such as acquiring citizenship). Many of these veterans found work opportunities unavailable outside their home state so they returned home without having acquired any skills beyond those gained through education or trade training! In 1957, groundbreaking occurred for the current Kountze School building which is located on Main Street today. It served as both a primary school from 1901-1951 while also serving as an adult education facility until its replacement by the present day building in 2001-2002.
