The United States Navy has a long and proud history in Pharr, Texas. The USS Constitution was the first military vessel to arrive in the city on November 10, 1845. The USS Constitution was a brig built at Portsmouth, New Hampshire by John Fitch and launched on October 12, 1846. She served as flagship of Commodore David Dixon’s Squadron on the Texan Coast Guard Station Galveston from 1850 to 1853. In that time she also took part in numerous naval engagements against Mexican forces during the Texas War of Independence. In 1865 the USS Constitution underwent an extensive rebuild at Norfolk Naval Shipyard. She recommissioned under Commander James Ewing with her new name – CSS Virginia (1866-1869). During this time she participated in several operations off Cuba and Haiti before being decommissioned for another year on February 9th 1870 at Philadelphia Naval Yard. On July 21st 1870, CSS Virginia became available for sale and was accepted by Mrs. Aventuri Forbes of San Antonio as a gift from the United States Government to be used as a hospital ship on behalf of the City of Pharr. On December 5th 1870 HMS Victory arrived in San Antonio with orders to take over management of CSS Virginia until another navy ship could be brought into service to take her place. USS Monitor arrived soon thereafter and completed her takeover on January 1st 1871 after which HMS Victory continued managing CSS Virginia until December 2nd 1872 when she finally left for good leaving behind one of America’s most cherished navy vessels –CSSVirginia still operational today!

Pharr, Texas is located in the Midwestern United States. The town was established in 1836 as a trading post between Santa Fe and Austin. It became an agricultural center after settlers brought in large tracts of land for farming. In 1907, Pharr became the seat of Hardin County when it was formed from parts of Travis and Hardin counties. The county was renamed to McAllen County in 1951. Today, Pharr is a small but vibrant community with a population of around 12,000 people. The town has two schools, one public and one private; as well as two businesses, one family-owned and one local company. The people of Pharr are proud of their history, culture and quaint little town character. The first residents of Pharr arrived during the early 1800s following the Mexican-American War in which Texas won its independence from Mexico. At that time, much of what is now Pharr was part of the Mexican Villa Rancho San Antonio de Padua south of Austin. After American independence was recognized by Mexico in 1846, many northern Californios followed Governor José Antonio Medina to Texas to fight for independence from Spain on October 16th that year (the date marks national day), including some who settled at Padua Rancho San Antonio de Paredes eastof Austin on February 15th (the date marks Mexican Independence Day). On November 1st 1830 those Californios were given title to all present within Alamo Creek Rancho las Trinitas y la Mesa Vieja Spanish settlement lying between La Purísima Concepción River on the South side about five miles northwestward thence water mark about 2 1/2 miles northwesterly along same line then easterly a few hundred yards over sand bars until eventuate site where our present home stands today having been planted there by my father Alonso Luna about 6 years ago his deed bearing date January 10th Apt 1833’ Today's PHARR began as just a Trading Post named "Pharr" which comprised 4 square miles inside what is now known as Hardin County near modern day McAllen TX Within this limits 4 men had graced this earth: My Father Alonso Luna July 10th Apt 1833 In1836 PHARR became an actual Town built by several Men under leadership such as myself & Bishop Jameson
