Pharr is a city in Johnson County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now Pharr was James Smeaton in 1839. On November 7, 1845, a group of men from east Texas met at the town square to organize the county of Johnson County. On December 12, 1845, they voted to name their new county after Sam Houston (the hero of the Battle of San Jacinto). By 1860, Pharr had become an important wheat and cotton center with a busy Mercantile Street. In 1865-68, General Antonio López de Santa Anna attacked Pharr and destroyed most of its cotton plantations; however local militia avenged his soldiers by destroying many more plantations and total destruction including crops and homes left behind by Santa Anna's forces. In 1870-72, J.M. Hogg built one of the first large frame churches inTexas when he erected one on lot No 1 within present day downtown Pharr limits – still standing today as First Baptist Church Annex #2 (). Other early churches include Good Shepherd Episcopal Church (1875), Second Presbyterian church (1879), Methodist Episcopal church (1881) and Baptist church (1901). In 1896-97 architect George Matson designed one of Dallas' first municipally owned public schools - Goodrich school district no 8 (); later that same year it became State Capitol School District No 5 (). During World War II Japanese American citizens living in Pharr were interned during 1942-1945 without due process or trial; this led to tension between Japanese Americans living in towns throughout Texas before war started and those living inside the city limits during wartime activities conducted by U.S military authorities who considered them all "enemy aliens." City officials tried to ease tensions between these two groups through lectures on human rights offered free to all residents four times per week starting on October 3rd 1941 until 1943 when they were stopped because it became clear that some people within Japanese American community didn't want these lectures given because they thought potential allies would be among those attending them; also some townspeople felt that giving away free airtime would help attract more Allied troops as well as increase recruitment for military services which could have been used against Japan instead of helping protect her people On September 25th 1916 Sheriff Charles Ewing arrived with deputies from other departments to take over law enforcement duties for attorney general James Giddings who had just resigned after years leading Austin's largest law firm; following Giddings' resignation Stonewall Jackson replaced him as sheriff effective September 26th 1916 .
