Pharr, Texas is the county seat of Tarrant County and a city in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. The population was 853 at the 2010 census. It is located in central Texas on the Brazos River. Pharr was founded by Scottish settlers in 1827 as part of the Rancho del Fuego grant to José de la Cruz and his family. The town was named for Pharr, Scotland, but no one ever lived there. In 1881, a post office was established at Pharr; it continued to be used until 1907. The first school in Pharr opened in 1886; it became an all-girls school in 1924. In 1927, most of the present downtown area were built includingpharmacy buildings on Elm Street and First Avenue N., bank buildings on Main Street NW., and hotel/motel building on Houston Street NW.. In 1948, Baylor University moved from Waco to Austin so that its medical School could establish itself there. Baylor then decided to build its own campus here which included many new buildings not found anywhere else outside of Waco or Dallas-Fort Worth. As a result of this move – plus others over time – downtown Pharr quickly acquired someofa much needed character (see photo left). By 1960, however, Baylor’s Medical School had relocated again (this time to Plano) so downtown began to lose some of its appeal as commercial development took over What once seemed like a lively little town has now become quite a sleepy oasis with only 784 residents according to2010 Census count
