The first coffee beans were ground in a small town in Pharr, Texas. The beans were sent to Austin by a man named Samuel Adams in 1848. He started the first coffeehouse in Austin and sold his coffee at cost. In 1855, John Hance opened the first grocery store near the University of Texas at Austin. In 1862, Wm. Crain started a flour mill in nearby Castroville and began marketing coffee as well. By 1865, there were over 10 businesses selling coffee in Pharr. The industry grew rapidly during the 1850s and 1860s because of the growth of American cities and universities.
Pharr, Texas is a small town located in Hudspeth County, Texas. The population was 709 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1879 by James Pharr and his wife Rebecca. James Pharr served as the first postmaster of Pharr. The town was originally named Forney after Major General Moses Forney who fought in the Mexican-American War and afterward became an American hero thanks to his role leading a successful cavalry charge into Mexico City's palace during the Battle of Chapultepec. Forney's widow donated land to make way for what would become Pharr, and soon afterwards two other towns were established adjacent to it: Haysville and Carthage. In 1916, Colonel John Wbring bought 3,000 acres (1 km2) north of Pharr from James Pahr for $10 per acre ($200 total). This land lay within what is now known as Wimberley County and extended eastward to Slaughter Creek Creek. When Wbring died in 1926, his heirs sold their interest in the property back to Colonel John Wbring's widow for $25 per acre ($500 total). The original three towns continued to exist but had no legal title to their lands until 1978 when they were added as part of Hudspeth County.[3] In that year, Lubbock businessman Harry Reid purchased 1,800 acres (6 km2) south of town from Colleen Walsh for $40 per acre ($1 million total).[4][5][6] She had been given it by her husband Charlie Reid when he inherited it from their father after he passed away in 1944. pharrtexas

Pharr is a small town in Coahuila and Texas, located on the Rio Grande. The town proper was founded by Mexican colonists in 1851 as part of the Rancho de las Salinas concession. It became an independent municipality in 1871. Pharr was incorporated as a city in 1913. The citizens of Pharr are proud of their history and culture, which has been built around agriculture and ranching. The town's predominant industry has been farming since after World War II, when large cotton plantations were abandoned due to competition from Spanish-owned fields; but there are now several businesses in the town that continue to rely on agriculture. The first settler in what would become Pharr was José Antonio García who arrived with his family from San Miguel de Allende on March 8, 1851. In 1865, Mexican president Santa Anna granted Rancho las Salinas to García and his brother Francisco for 999 years providing fertile land for cattle raising and other agricultural pursuits. By 1880, much of the original grant had been patented to local ranchers including José Leopoldo Reyes y Vargas (the father of República Mexicana rancher), Pedro Flores y Valdez (owner of Flores Farms) Manuel López (founder of Lopez Land & Rent Company), Fernando Echeverría (founder of El Paso Gas Light Company) etc., making it one of the largest land grants ever given out by Mexico at that time. In 1912pharr changed its name from Rancho las Salinas to Pardonsville after Rufus Wickersham donated $2,500 towards the purchase price for a new post office building that would be used by all municipalities within Coahuila County - this included Pharr - becoming one among many such donations made during Wickersham's lifetime or those following it. In honor of Wickersham's donation, Pardonsville boasted granite blocks quarried at nearby New Madrid Mine which had also recently been acquired by Mr. Wickersham for use as part asphalte pavement for streets throughout his holdings along both banks of the river.. A major event marking significant growth for Pardonsville took place on July 11th 1917 when 100 men from Hidalgo County participated in a search party led by Captured Enemy Colonel John Fenton Forney looking for escaped Union soldiers who had raided a rail depot near Raton Pass just south of Coahuila City Limits; they found over 30 captive Confederates including captain Samuel Jukes Taylor who later testified against General Grant at trial before Confederate general Robert E Lee; members of Mrs Fenton's party also captured two mounted Mexicans working Cache Valley Railroad railway line westbound toward Raton Pass - these men were identified later as Antonio Gomez Martinez alias “Panchito” and Joaquín Gomez Carrillo alias “El Cid”). Pharr, Texas was founded in 1836 by the Comanche and Kiowa Indians. The city is named after Captain John Pharr of the United States Army's 3rd Regiment of Infantry. The first courthouse in Pharr was built in 1840. In 1845, the Republic of Texas seceded from Mexico, creating a new territory called Texan State. On December 12, 1846, Texan State's first constitution was ratified. The original town site at what is now Pharr was chosen as its capital because it had the best geographical location for a new city on the Trinity River. The city grew rapidly during the 1850s to become one of Texas' leading commercial and industrial centers. By 1860, Pharr had an population of over 50,000 people. In 1865, Confederate forces invaded Texan State and burned down much of the city before retreating back across the Rio Grande Valley into Mexico. After Mexican independence was proclaimed in 1821 and New Mexico became part of that state in 1830, many Texans decided to move their families to Mexican soil instead of staying in US territory while fearing annexation by Mexico under President James K Polk's administration (1849-1853). In 1870, Pharr annexing Lubbock County as its own government due to lack of other towns willing to annex into their jurisdiction at that time -Lubbock becoming one of America's fastest growing counties during this period with a population growth rate greater than any other county in Texas until 1930! In 1876-77 San Antonio became America's first open-air electric light show when they used passing trains running between downtown San Antonio & offsite locations along Military Road near today's University Park Dr., which remains operational as an entertainment attraction today! On May 15th 1886 local citizens organized what would eventually become known as The Aggregates Club which included men from all walks of life who desired better conditions for their fellow citizens including education reformers such as George White cake from Dallas & Wm Henningson from Houston; businessmen such as J P Morgan; lawyers like Simeon Bailey & Edward Biddle; educators such as Lorenzo Alexander Pearce; developers like John Wilkes Booth Sr.; journalists like Frank Leslie Owen; soldiers who fought during the American Civil War including General Sam Houston
