Pflugerville, Texas is a town in McAllen County, Texas, United States. The population was 6,762 at the 2010 census. Pflugerville is part of the McAllen-Edinburg-Mission Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to enter what is now Pflugerville were Frenchmen who founded a mission called "La Hacienda" on November 16, 1736. The mission was abandoned in 1824 and by 1830 all of the French colonists had either left or died from natural causes. A group of Englishmen named Ford came to TX in 1828 and started trading with the Mexican government. They began building a rancho around 1829; it was eventually sold to James Waco by General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna for $1 million on December 12, 1840. In 1845 Waco sold his interest to John Neely Bryan who renamed it Pflugerville after himself and set about developing it as a cattle market center with its own post office and courthouse (the first one in Texas). By 1860 there were over 100 buildings within 10 miles of Pflugerville's limits including stores, gin mills, churches, hotels and other businesses. In 1865 Rev. J B Priest became the first Episcopal priest ever ordained in Austin when he started serving at St Mary's Church on Red River near present day Mckenzie Drive. He later served at Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish which merged into Trinity Cathedral in Austin in 1913. On January 9th 1915 an earthquake destroyed parts of downtown Austin & most adjacent neighborhoods killing more than 200 people including many prominent Texans such as Judge Roy Bean & Mayor Sam Houston Jr.. Bishop Harry Helms consecrated new Cathedral Basilica Of Our Lady Of Guadalupe [now Christ The King Catholic Church] just east of downtown on October 8th 1915 but this did not prevent local citizens from rebuilding their homes until they could obtain federal assistance under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 which authorized funding for reconstruction projects that included housing for African Americans following Brown v Board Of Education v Ferguson (1954). As cotton farming increased during World War II there was an increase demand for food products such as milk and eggs so Lubbock entrepreneur C F White decided to open what would become one of the largest grocery stores west of the Mississippi River when he opened Valley Grocery Company on February 22nd 1945 next door to Lubbock’s old Fort Worth Market/ Hubbard’s Drugstore which had been closed down due to damage sustained during World War II while also becoming known as “The Ghetto” because only black residents were allowed inside while white residents used nearby Central Park across Broadwalk street where they could purchase groceries without being observed by law enforcement or store security personnel
