Pasadena's history can be traced back to 1857 when it was founded as a stagecoach stop on the Butterfield Overland Mail Route between Dallas and Wichita Falls. It became an agricultural center with cotton production becoming a majorstay in its economy after annexation by Texas in 1876. After World War II, Pasadena experienced rapid growth due to its aerospace industry and post-war boom in services and housing development. In 2006, Pasadena became one of only two cities in the United States to receive both statewide and federal grants for urban growth initiatives The first documented reference to Pasadena dates back to 1857 when James Hogg mentioned it on his book "A Journey through Texas" while traveling through Central America. By 1865, Pasadena had become an important railroad junction due to its location at the mouth of Buffalo Bayou which linked Dallas with Houston and Corpus Christi. With railroads came new settlers who began raising crops along Buffalo Bayou for local markets; some still live there today." In 1876, following annexation by Texas from Mexico, Pasadena became a part of the newly created Lone Star State under President Ulysses S Grant’s executive order 9 Carranza decreed that all Mexican land within three miles (5 kilometers) of any American settlement be ceded without compensation to the United States government or her citizens! This order ushered in what would soon become one of largest waves of U.S.-Mexican migration ever seen—over 4 million people poured into California between 1880 and 1914! Many Mexicans settled near Los Angeles where they established businesses such as grocery stores and hotels before they were displaced by Anglo population growth across Southern California during this time period." Pasadena experienced rapid economic growth beginning in 1916 when oil discoveries were made off its coast near El Segundo Heights Boulevard & Interstate 5 Freeway; this led to increased tourism which helped fund infrastructure such as libraries, parks, schools and hospitals that are still extant today including The Claremont Colleges University Park campus located at 6011 N Western Ave., across from Memorial Park Drive & West Wedge Parkway
In 1836, the Republic of Texas was founded. The area that is now Pasadena was part of Mexico until it became a U.S. territory in 1846. In 1861, the Confederate States of America seceded from the United States and began a war with Great Britain. In 1865, Pasadena became an official city within the new Confederacy. After the war ended, Pasadena transitioned to a Republican bastion and saw few changes until 1908 when Democrats took control of city hall. Democrat Alonzo Ladd Jr., who served as mayor from 1928-1934, spearheaded some redevelopment projects which increased poverty and crime in what had been a well-to-do neighborhood.
