Pampa, Texas is a small town in the U.S. state of Texas. The population was 2,898 at the 2010 census. It is located in the Dallas–Fort Worth metro area and is part of the Plano, TX metropolitan statistical area. The name Pampa comes from the Nahuatl word panama, meaning "place where there are flowers." At first it was thought that this name was given to the community by people who came through during a trip down Mexico's Rio Grande River in 1821 as part of an exploration party led by Captain James Hogg. However, more likely it comes from a nearby creek called Palo de la Fuente which means "flowery stream" because of its many wildflowers including rhododendrons and azaleas. Pampa started as just one settlement on what would become today's city limits; however it quickly grew into what it is today due to its location and access to water resources. Today, Pampa has over 50 businesses and organizations that contribute to its unique culture and history including several museums, churches, schools and businesses that have been around for generations. When my grandfather, George H. Bigham, founded the Bigham Brothers Milling Company in 1895, he located his mill on the banks of the Pampa River. The company operated until 1907 when it merged with other mills to form the Archer Mills Corporation. The mill closed in 1978 but some remnants remain today including a lumberyard and a restaurant called Ben’s BBQ which opened in 1984. Pampa is known for its cornproducts such as flour and meal, as well as its cattle ranching industry which continues to this day. The town also has a population of approximately 50 residents which includes a variety of businesses and organizations including the Pampa Historical Museum, Ben’s BBQ (now closed), and the Pampa Community Library which opened in 1994.
