Pampa is a small town in Medina County, Texas, United States. The population was 614 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Midland, TX Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Pampa were the Lipan Apache Indians. They hunted and gathered resources on the surrounding plains for food and shelter. In 1836, ranching began in Medina County by John Wesley Hardin and his family. By 1840, over 25 buildings had been erected in Pampa; some still stand today including the Pampa Implement Company Store which closed in 1957. In 1881, Wm Howerton bought land east of Pampa from José de la Guerra y Castro and started farming it himself. He named his farm "Haverton" after Haverton Ranch near San Angelo, Texas where he had grown up as a boy. This ranch became known as "Haverton Valley". It was during this time that early settlers heard about grants of land being offered for sale at nearby Amarillo by General Antonio López de Santa Anna. Santa Anna wanted to create an area called Zacatecas Central so that he could move cattle from Chihuahua into Mexico proper and reduce competition with American farmers who were growing crops there. After listening to proposals from many interested partiesincluding local farmer John Wesley Hardinand viewing surveys of the area around Amarillo, Santa Anna selected Pampa as one of three sites to be developed as a center for Zapatista insurgents under Manuel González de Cárdenas while they awaited Mexican independence (the others locations were Juarez and Morelia). On January 9th 1861 Santiago Carrillo arrived at Brownsville on horseback with news of Mexican Independence and nominated José Miguel Hernandez as provisional president of Mexico instead of Don Carlos Montt who had been nominated by Emperor Pedro II weeks earlier! On January 17th 1861 Hernandez proclaimed Mexicans living outside Mexico must leave within 3 months or face martial law! A groupof mainly Texans decided to stay put but soon realized that their own homes would not be safe without protection so they left too! Alarmed by reports coming back from Mexico City about an outbreak of cholera there decided to send help before it got too bad! Pampa's incorporation date is unknown but it likely occurred prior to October 15th 1879 when Judge Snively registered all property titles for citizens residing therein- this included those living east of US 95 & south/west OF I-10 (). On December 4th 1886 Texaco announced their intent to build a refinery at present day Midland which would make them one of America's largest oil companies (& largest gasoline retailer). When construction began on site what was then rural farmland turned into a city with over 100 businesses between 1935-1940 including Texaco's refinery & distribution center (which remains open today), 12 schools (8 high school/12 secondary), 5 churches (2 Baptist/2 Roman Catholic), 2 hospitals & 1 military hospital(?).
