The arrival of these refugees has helped to create a Palestinian community in Texas that is diverse and multi-ethnic, with representatives from all over the Middle East. The earliest Palestinian immigrants to Texas arrived around 1848 when some 7,000 Jews fleeing persecution on European soil landed on what is now the east coast of Texas. They soon founded settlements along the Gulf Coast where they engaged in agriculture and commerce until U.S. occupation forces forced them out of their land during World War I. Afterward, enrollment at American University began swelling as students from all over North America sought refuge from fascist Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy and Spain. In 1920–21 Congress designated Palestine as an international non-member observer state under United Nations auspices; however this designation did not stop Zionist settlers from moving into Palestine until 1948 when Israel became a republic. At the time of its creation, the Israeli political system was based on proportional representation whereby each party had two members (the Knesset) while Arabs had no say whatsoever within government or society save through communal councilsor qadisah (villages). This setup created tension between Israelis and Palestinians which led to violence throughout 1948 leading up to Israel’s independence on May 14th that year….. For years after independence Israelis viewed Palestinians as second class citizens—-a view that was gradually eroded by successive governments responses to demographic challenges posed by Palestinians…. After Oslo agreement reached between Israelis and PLO it shifted focus from rights for Arabs only towards justice for all people including Kurds, Mizrahim (Middle Easterners), Haredis (religious Zionists)….. As part of Oslo Agreement process Jordan also agreed recognition for PLO presence with certain conditions included Jordanian recognition for PLO leadership including participation in foreign policy decisions……Israeli reaction was one sided against autonomy given majority Arab population although millions lived peacefully side by side withJews until 1973 when Intifada began……………………………………..Palestinian community has never lost hope or faith despite many challenges faced such as lack education & opportunity; Continual violence & discrimination against them especially due to policies made by Israeli government
Palestine, Texas history began in 1847 when the Mexican-American War ended. In response to the war, General Antonio Lázaro Córdoba founded the first permanent American settlement in what is now southern Texas. The town of Palestine was named after the biblical city of Jerusalem. A trading post was established at Palestine Springs in 1849 and a post office was established there in 1850. The town grew rapidly and by 1865 it had a population of around 150 people. The early days of Palestine were difficult; many people immigrated because they could not find work elsewhere in America. Although Palestine thrived for a time, it eventually went through tough times due to competition from other towns and counties within Texas. In 1957, the town passed away but its legacy lives on through fundraising events, historical exhibits, and education programs about the town's story.
