It is the county seat of Kaufman County and the largest city in Kaufman County by population. The land that would become Orange was first settled by Native Americans as part of the Wichita Nation. In 1845, John Wesley Hardin founded a post office in what is now Orange and named it after his family's orange groves in Georgia. The post office moved to its current location in 1849. The town of Orange began as a small farming community on the banks of the Red River near present-day Fort Worth. By 1870, orange production had increased enough to warrant an official town name change from "Nacogdoches" to "Orange". In 1880, two cotton mills were built in Orange and quickly became major economic engines for the town. By 1907, orange production had peaked and most of the mills closed down; however, one mill reopened under new ownership and continued operations until 1916 when it too went out of business. The townsfolk banded together to form a civic authority called "The Trustees" which conducted several important tasks including developing streets and buildings within town limits as well as sponsoring annual events such as Fourth Of July fireworks displays from downtown areas across town center In 1924, William Hays (founder of Waco) bought some land east of Orange between Creek Road and Utopia Parkway for $10 per acre with plans to build a retirement home then known as "Hays Manor". After unsuccessfully trying to get donations toward this goal from individuals and businesses throughout Kaufman County – primarily through letter-writing campaigns – Hays decided to build the home himself instead The original Hays Manor cost $625,000 ($ today) and was completed in 1933; it remains one of Southern Living's top 10 properties ever sold To commemorate its centennial anniversary in 2003, Orange erected a large granite obelisk at Main Street corner just south of Arlington National Cemetery where Sheriff Earle McGee used to stop motorists on his way into work . The history of Orange, Texas can be traced back to the early 1800s. The area that now includes Orange was first settled by pioneers in the 1820s. By 1829, a post office had been established at what is now called Orange, and by 1836, a large town had been founded. The growth of Orange was accelerated by the arrival of railroad cars in the 1840s. In 1850, a store and hotel were built on Commerce Street in what is now known as downtown Orange. The town rapidly grew and soon developed into a major center for commerce and culture in northeastern Texas. In 1863, an ordinance was passed establishing a school district in Orange. The district became part of the Houston School District in 1907. In 1928, orange trees were planted on Discovery Boulevard near present-day University Avenue in downtownOrange to commemorate the centennial of the town’s incorporation. During World War II, orange production increased due to demand from American troops stationed overseas. A munitions plant was erected along Railroad Avenue east of town during World War II; however, it ceased operations after the war ended. DowntownOrange experienced significant redevelopment starting around 1990 when plans emerged for creating an entertainment complex centered around two large stadiums: one for soccer (the city also hosted its first professional soccer game wearing American kits) and another for basketball (the original facility would have been adjacent to Memorial Stadium). However those plans never came to fruition due to financial difficulties experienced by developers over time – although some new businesses have since been started inside Memorial Stadium itself such as The Soo Line Distillery & Restaurant and Live Nation Amphitheater which opened in fall 2014 adjacent to Fifth Third Fieldhouse which served as home plate for both baseball and softball until its demolition in late 2016).
