Orange, Texas is a small town located in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex of the United States. It is bordered by Arlington County to the north, Collin County to the east, Denton County to the south, and Wise County to the west. The population was 8,478 at the 2010 census. The first settler in Orange was James A. Pearce who arrived in 1859. In 1868, Orange became part of Galveston County and laterGalveston Township. The first post office in Orange was established in 1870 and named after General John Crain, who had helped lead Texas during Reconstruction. In 1902,Orange incorporated as a city and has since grown into one of Texas' fastest-growing cities with over 100,000 residents currently residing there. During its heyday as an agricultural center for southeast Texas before World War II it boasted a cotton gin (now defunct), two machine shops (now defunct), four grocery stores and eleven churches/synagogues (one current). Today's economy relies heavily on services such as healthcare and retail trade with concentrations found within close proximity to major shopping malls including Mesquite Village Mall and NorthPark Center mall across I-30 from downtown Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport. Orange is a town in and the county seat of Orange County, Texas, United States. The population was estimated to be 30,853 in 2000. It takes its name from a type of citrus fruit, the orange. The first people to live in Orange were Creek Indians who hunted and gathered wild oranges around what is now downtown Orange. A post office called "Orange" was established in 1875, and the town began to grow up around it. The first school was built in 1878 on land donated by Mrs. Jane Hardin. In 1907, the city of Orange was incorporated as a result of an act of the state legislature; it included parts of present-day Downtown Orange as well as most of what is now eastside Clearwater Street and westside Live Oak Avenue. In 1954, after years of negotiation with local landowners and business interests, voters passed an orange zone ordinance creating a five-mile (8 km) radius around downtown areas for commercial development purposes only; no housing or residential development could take place within that radius without prior approval from City Hall. This ordinance became known as "The Taxidermy Zone". It wasn’t until 1978 that city limits were put into place including much of eastside Clearwater Street and westside Live Oak Avenue which forms today’s core area for Downtown Orange – bounded by I-10/US 75 to the north, US 67/I-10 to the south (the original border between Orange County and Cameron County), State Highway 6 (SH 6) running through Downtown from east to west (it concurrent with FM 1411 until SH 22 ran concurrently just south of downtown), along State Road 350W which bisects Downtown from north to south (this road forms today’s Business Loop 410W). Today redevelopment continues apace with new apartment buildings being erected on both sides of I-10 just east of Main Street near US 75 while new shopping centers are planned for across I-10 at FM 1411 & 20th St., just southwest of Main Street past FM 8215 & FM 928S
The first settlers in Orange, Texas were General James F. Austin and his lieutenant, George Richards on November 3, 1836. The town was founded on a Rancho Santa Ana grant that was given to Captain Juan Seguin by the Mexican government. It would be renamed San Antonio de Bexar three years later after General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna's victory over Mexico at the Battle of Bexar on August 29, 1837. In 1840, the United States installed a military garrison at San Antonio and it served as the capital of Texas from 1845 to 1849. In 1850, San Antonio became an independent republic and its own government was established with Austin as its first president. From 1861-1865, San Antonio served as the capital of Confederate Texas during the American Civil War. On April 6, 1865, it surrendered to Union forces at Park Row in downtown San Antonio without a fight. After the war ended and Reconstruction began in America, San Antonio became one of powerhouse cities in Texas because of its commerce and industry. The city experienced rapid growth due to new transportation options created by railroads such as the Houston & Pacific Railroad Company (HP) and also because of new housing developments such as Hyde Park which were built adjacent to older stockyards near Interstate 10 and Commerce Street which remain today an important commercial district for the city. During this time period there were many protestations against white supremacy throughout Southern California from African Americans who had recently come into contact with whites for the very first time through slavery; until these protests turned into riots when they encountered similar treatment from whites on various social occasions including weddings or funerals outside black churches throughout California while living below poverty lines - conditions that continued even into post-war Reconstruction America where race relations improved somewhat but remained segregated stills across most southern states until Jim Crow laws were put into place following World War II
