The Navy has a long and proud history in Odessa, Texas. From its roots as the United States Naval Station at Corpus Christi, the shipyard that built USS Constitution in 1821 to its current role as Naval Base Fort Worth, the Navy has been a major part of Odessa's community. The City of Odessa owes much to the Navy, too. The first naval base on Texan soil was located here, and USS Constitution was not the only navy ship manufactured in Odessa. The city also produced CSS Alabama (1864), CSS Florida (1868), USS Enterprise (1914), USS Ponce (1916), and many more vessels during World War II. Today, the Naval Base Fort Worth houses numerous warships and submarines from both America's oceanside fleet and Europe's navies, making it one of the largest naval bases in North America. The facility is home to thousands of sailors and their families who come to enjoy recreational activities such as swimming, fishing, boating, gunnery practice aboard ships afloat or ashore,and more. In addition to providing vital military services our nation’s defense posture is also bolstered by visits by visiting heads of state or other dignitaries who are members of Congress or cabinet members from states bordering Texas. In recent years there have been several deployments by Japan’s Maritime Self-Defense Force which has made Odessa an even closer local partner with Japan’s Defense Ministry repsonsible for various events taking place downtown including concerts at American Airlines Center as well asexport shows at Toyota Stadium which bring together Japanese exporters with US buyers. The History Of A Fleet Shipyard...USS Constitution vs Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force It would be naïve not to mention that any city Smaller than Odessa wouldn't have had access to a shipyard back then when ships were built for the US Navys Atlantic Fleet coastal forces - this was prior to WWII when yards like Portsmouth NH did all sorts of heavy infantry fighting vehicles etc...USS Constitution began construction on November 17th 1821 -yesterday actually! This hugeship dominated Corpus Christi Harbor until it decommissioned on October 15th 1846 after sailing into dry dock for over two years!!! Destroyers preceded her - Her Majestys HMS President & HMS Hunter but they were never completed so we can forget about them! On June 3rd 1865 Commodore Perry sailed upriver past Harlingen Island & anchored off present day San Antonio Landing LOL

Odessa, Texas (officially the City of Odessa) is a city in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 96,594 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Midland County. The first European to visit what is now Odessa was a Spanish sailor named Juan de la Cosa on October 25, 1499. His ship was lost during a storm off the coast of Texas and he decided to land on an uninhabited island in order to find help. A man by the name of Ector met him there and invited him back onto his boat so that they could sail back home. De La Cosa named the island San Fernando and built a small chapel on it in 1502 as part of his missionary efforts in what is now Midland County. In 1836, when Odessa was founded as a town by James Fenton, it had just 10 residents. By 1839 it had grown large enough for Fenton to build a jail and for him and other settlers to build homes. In 1845 General Sam Houston granted permission for Odessa to be chartered as an independent city under the name "Houston". The original courthouse still stands today within walking distance of downtown Odessa The discovery of oil in 1901 led to increased activity around Odessa- local businesses became involved in refining crude oil from local wells while also marketing products such as gasoline and kerosene locally In 1906 Houston annexed much of east Dallas County into its city limits making odessanians citizens even though they continued to reside outside Houston The annexation led directly to some tension between Houston's suburbanites and their downtown business people who saw themselves as being encroached upon In 1907 construction began on what would become known as 'the Great Western Highway' which linked Odessa with largerHouston
