The Odessa Coast Guard was organized on November 15, 1892. The first members were three men from Odessa and two men from nearby Victoria. The original mission of the Coast Guard was to protect navigation on the Texas coast. In 1911, the Coast Guard began providing search and rescue services for vessels in distress. In 1915, the Coast Guard established a communications center in Odessa to keep track of vessels and weather conditions along the Texas coast. On December 2, 1922, the Odessa Coast Guardsmen helped put an end to a local fishing dispute by firing shots into the air to signal that no fishing was allowed in their area. In 1924, Captain FW Hatton became Officer-in-Charge of the Odessa unit. By this time, there had been some growth within the Coast Guardsmen and they decided to establish a school for officers in 1928. On January 5th of that year, Second Lieutenant WT McCormick became Commanding Officer of Station 1 at Point Isabelle after serving as First Sergeant for six months. During World War II (1939-1945), Station 1 played an important role in coastal defense by providing gunfire support for naval gunboats operating along offshore patrols during Operation Neptune’s Spear against Japanese submarines off Coastal Texas coastal waters. After World War II ended, Station 1 reverted back to its previous functions as a maritime control station until it closed on October 30th 1986 when it was transferred over to other units within Odessa Police Department

Odessa is a city in Odessa County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,636 at the 2010 census. The town of Odessa was founded in 1867 by Captain John C. Frémont and his party of American cavalry under the command of General Antonio López de Santa Anna as part of the Texas Revolution. It became an important center for cattle drives during the period from 1870 to 1910. In 1865, Odessa was designated as the capital of Texas by Gov. George H. Wickersham; it was moved to Austin in 1871 but remained its capital until 1907 when it becameHouston. In 1911, after Austin's incorporation as a city, Odessa become its second city charter and remains its current municipal seat today. The history of Odessa begins with Captain John C. Frémont and his party of American cavalry under General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna who were on their way to fight against Mexican president Agustín Carranza when they were stopped near present-day Odessa on November 30, 1867 while attempting to ride westward through what is now Midland County into Presidio County (now El Paso County), Mexico City Province (the old province). On December 5th they arrived at what is now downtown Odessa after days riding over open country which included parts of present-day Midland and Chihuahua Counties; they found that there was no fort or post within reach so they began construction on Fort Donelson which would serve as their temporary headquarters while they build settlements east of San Antonio across Buffalo Creek where they named their new town after General Donelson's Headquarters: "Odessus". Although Fort Donelson never saw action due to Mexican resistance it served as a strategic point for months leading up to the Battle of San Jacinto which ended Mexican independence from Spanish rule on April 6th 1861 Captain Frémont's men future heros such as Ulysses S Grant also grew up in this time period living nearby including future governor James Bowie who later served in both President Andrew Johnson's administrations In 1870 Texas annexed much adjacent New Mexico Territory forming Alamo Division with Santa Fe & Rio Grande Railroad becoming part-ownership Company known still today as Rio Grande Western Railroad On January 8th 1880 Governor Edmund Gentry ordered all public buildings except jail closed because a large influx of illegal immigrants had been discovered along Brazos River just outside town limits One year later on February 2nd 1880 Major Robert Epps raiders burned down courthouse & other public buildings causing great loss $4,000 On March 3rd 1880 Mayor James Murchison declared martial law order suspending civil rights & government functions throughout county Governor Gentry called out National Guard troops from Houston led by Colonel JB Stuart arriving at odessus late Saturday night en route to help quash local uprising beginning Sunday morning 4/3/80 name given then following events are known : “battle o’odessus”Battle fought between pro-government forces commanded by Lt Col Stuart & rebels Marshalls Fordyce commanding 5000+ native Texans federalists only 50–75 miles away led by Confederate general Braxton Bragg objectives were restoration order Kirkwood Massacre resulting deaths total 25 Americans killed 9 Mexicans also killed includingcaptain Frémont none returned home alive many thousands driven into exile or slavery
