The Odessa Air Force Base was established in 1942 as the first operational airbase in Texas. The base served as a primary training ground for the United StatesAAF during World War II. It played an important role during the Korean War, and continued to serve as a key US military installation until it was closed in 1997. Today, Odessa Air Force Base is home to the 149th Tactical Airlift Wing (149 TAW), which provideslift services for military members and civilians in Central Texas. The wing also operates five KC-135R Stratotankers, two C-130Js, three MH-60Rs, one DC-9 and one A320 passenger aircraft. Additionally, Odessa AFB houses several support facilities such as an armory, engineering laboratory, firefighting academy and health care center.
