The Odessa Air Force Base gift history begins in 1942 with the arrival of a small squadron of Lockheed P-38s. The planes were used for training and combat missions during World War II. In 1945, the base was closed due to the war and opened up as an airbase for the USAF. The Rafael Aircraft Company was brought in to help with the development of jet aircraft, and in 1957, Odessa became one of the first bases in the USAF to receive a McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II. Since then, Odessa has played an important role within both USAF air forces and aerospace industry. Today, Odessa AFB is home to two squadrons of Boeing KC-135 Stratotankers; as well as two squadrons each of Lockheed Martin C-130J Globemasters and Learjets. Additionally, there are several dozen fighter jets including F/A-18 Hornets, F-16 Fighting Falcons, A-10 Warthogs and JASDF Suwalkas on duty at any given time. In total, over 2 thousand military personnel have served at Odessa AFB since it opened its doors to aviationankind back in 1941!
