North Richland Hills is a city in Dallas County, Texas, United States. The population was 105,471 at the 2000 census. North Richland Hills is the third-largest city in Dallas County afterDallas and Fort Worth. The namesake of the city is North Richland Hills businessman and philanthropist James E. Robertson who donated the land for what would become North Richland Hills. The first settlement in what would become North Richland Hills was made up of pioneer farmers who arrived in 1872. By 1900, there were over 100 businesses operating in the community with a population of over 100 people. In 1967, developer/citizens group Ira Allen & Partners began construction on Interstate 30 which would later be renamed I-30 South to honor then Mayor Tom Landry's donation of $1 million dollars to support development in the area south of I-30 (later becoming Downtown Dallas) by creating new streetscapes and neighborhoods including North Richland Hills Boulevard between Elmhurst Drive and Loop 610 East (now SouthPark Avenue). In 1970, construction on I-30 South completed and quickly became known as "the avenue that led to nowhere". I-30South had its own comprehensive freeway network with exits numbered 1 through 6 which made it easy for drivers to navigate from one side of town to another without having to exit at an interchange or drive through rural areas served by arterial highways such as US 87/I-635; this resulted in more jobs being created within I-30South than any other part of Dallas County during its early years. By 1990, however, traffic congestion along I-30South had caused several stores and restaurants along that section of Blvd.]]to close their doors due to lack of parking spaces available nearby;[3][4] ultimately leading to a decline in business activity throughout much of Downtown Dallas resulting in joblessness rates above 50%. North Richland Hills is a town in Cameron County, Texas, United States. The population was 9,521 at the 2010 census. North Richland Hills was founded in 1876 and incorporated in 1886. The community lies on the eastern edge of Cameron County and is bordered by Midlothian to the north, Pecos to the east, Grapevine to the south, and White Settlement to the west. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. The name "North Richland Hills" originated from a post office called "Richmond" which was established in 1878 within what would become North Richland Hills. In 1886, it became its own municipality after neighboring Midlothian abandoned its incorporation efforts because of disagreements over land boundaries. In 1907, when Cameron County was created from parts of Parker and McAllen Counties, North Richland Hills became one of its first municipalities. At that time it had a population of 3362 residents. In 1940 it had an population of 10,501 residents; however this number decreased as World War II began and many residents left for military service or other reasons. After the war ended in 1945, North Richland Hills' population grew slowly but steadily until it reached 14,031 by 1970; during that decade growth again slowed as more people moved away for work or other reasons in what would be known as suburbanization across Texas. However during the 1990s growth resumed due largely to plentiful job opportunities associated with new technology companies such as Nortel Networks (now Rogers Communications) and Dell Inc., which relocated their operations to nearby Irving before moving all their customer base out into Dallas-Fort Worth by 2000 – creating what has been known as "The Tech Triangle". As businesses expanded there were also numerous homebuilders who built ever larger homes throughout much of Northern Richardson County including Deer Park (later renamed Harkins), Flower Mound (later renamed Plano), Cottonwood Heights (later renamed Garland), Diamond Bar (later renamed Mesquite), Colleyville (later renamed Arlington) and Stonecloud Manor [1]. These developments have made up much of present day North Richland Hills along with smaller subdivisions off-road leading directly into them like Willowbrook Village[2], Legacy Oaks[3] etcetera located outside city limits near Interstate 35W/I-30 exit 59A/D).
