The area that now forms North Richland Hills was first developed as cattle pastures by ranchers in the 1870s. By 1902, strong demand for land along the Red River led to its annexation by Arlington Heights as a city in 1907. The growth of Arlington Heights eventually led to its own annexation by Tarrant County in 1912; this made North Richland Hills one of the largest cities in Tarrant County by 1920. In 1925–26, an engineering group hired by county commissioners recommended that Arlington Heights annex more than one mile (1 km) south of its current boundaries because development near Rice Lake would swamp land used for farming and other agricultural activities within East Dallas Ranch's borders. A referendum approved annexation on November 2nd 1926 with almost 74% voting in favor; this increased density around Rice Lake while reducing development capacity north of Arlington Heights'. During World War II (1939-1945), much of what is now North Richland Hills was/////// territory controlled by Japan due to strategic bombing raids during the war which destroyed many villages within miles of Tokyo along with vast amounts of farmland including much non-combat industrial output from munitions plants such as Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd.'s Kokura Plant located just outside town limits). On November 1, 1845, a group of Texans arrived on the rancho called North Richland Hills. It was here that they founded what is now North Richland Hills Township. The first settler in this area was James Robertson, who purchased land from the Mexican government in 1846. In 1849, Major General Zachary Taylor laid out a town called Richardson on the site of present-day North Richland Hills. However, this plan never came to fruition and Richardson reverted back to its original name in 1865.
