New Braunfels is a city in the U.S. state of Texas, located on the border of Presidio County and Hidalgo County. The population was estimated to be 107,811 in 2019. It was founded by German settlers in 1849 as a small town named Niederbrechen. New Braunfels became a city in 1907, after it was annexed by Austin. The first post office for New Braunfels opened on October 4, 1849, under the name of Niederbrechen. The name change came about because at that time it lay within the Mexican Territory of San Gabriel de Bexar (present-day Coahuila and Chihuahua), which had been part of Mexico until 1848 when it became part of the United States following its independence from Spain. The original inhabitants were mostly farmers who raised livestock, but also some merchants and traders did business in Niederbrechen before it became a city. The City Council decided to change its name to New Braunfels on July 7, 1907, due to popular demand from residents and businesses alike for the new moniker that better reflected the town's rapidly growing population and economic prospects. At that time, New Braunfels consisted of just over 1,000 people living in scattered rural areas around downtown along with several smaller townships including White Sands ranching country west of town and Speedway Ranch east of town; all within Presidio County boundaries then considered part of Round Rock Township (later Williamson County). As early as 1853 there were suggestions among some Texans residing outsideRound Rock Township about forming their own municipality or township within that area specifically for Germans since they constituted such a large percentage (approximately 60%)of all incoming settlersto what would become Austin during this period; more than half of whom were Of A Native American descent as well as nearly all newly arrived German immigrants at this time! In fact many Germans already lived throughout central Texas prior to 1800 having come overland through what is now Oklahoma Territory duringPopulation Growth between 1775-1810 million individuals from different parts cf North America crossed into what would become Texas via land route called the Santa Fe Trail! By 1830 most Germans had settled near present day Mission Reach southwest of RoundRock; however due to lack o water resources potential farming settlements north and eastward developed primarily around El Paso & Juarez Priorities! Soon German families started moving out into open prairies bordered by rolling hills covered with oak timber where they began making hay/grazing land while also constructing tenant buildings & residences dotting today's Old Town district bounded on one side by Lamar Boulevard & Bowie Road on El Paso River Valley Side (&West) University District bounded by IH 10 W & US 281 NW inside today's UT Campus Limits - current site undeveloped while Main Street runs SouthWEST&NorthEast inside UT Campus Limits - Today Interstate 20 Runs East& West AcrossRiverValleyAlongMainStreet
