Nederland, Texas is an unincorporated community in Potter County, Texas, United States. It lies on the Brazos River, about east of the county seat of Midland. The population was 1,828 at the 2010 census. The name Nederland comes from Dutch settlers who named it "New Holland," after a location in present-day Ontario, Canada. They called their watered land "Holland" because they found high water there while exploring what is now North America. The first post office in Nederland was established in 1881, and its ZIP code is 76536. In 1884 Wm. Hays organized a farmers' association which became the nucleus of what would become Midland County Agricultural Society (MACA). In 1902 MACA donated land to form Midland Heights Development Corporation to develop subdivisions around new shopping malls and other industrial areas north of Dallas/Fort Worth Airport. MACA also donated money for a town hall and schoolhouse which were moved to their current site in 1922. Nederland prospered through the 1920s as a cotton plantation center with large plantations along both banks of the Brazos River; however, by 1930 most people had left for opportunities elsewhere in Texas or Oklahoma due to Prohibition-era economic instability brought on by tariffs placed on imported liquor from Europe caused by World War I. Cotton production resumed only after Repeal legislation allowed alcoholic drinks to be sold without license starting Jan 1st 1933
