The coffee industry in the Netherlands is a long and storied one, dating back to at least the 17th century. The early Dutch Coffee Makers were some of the first to experiment with coffee brewing methods and tasted their first beans in 1653. Today, Dutch Coffee Roasters continue to innovate and develop their coffee businesses around the world. In Nederland, Texas, we are proud to be home to one of these roasters – Koffiehuis Amsterdam – which has been providing delicious espresso drinks since 2004. Koffiehuis Amsterdam was founded by Timo Preus and his wife Rita in2004 as an artisanal coffee shop located in the heart of Amsterdam’s red light district. With a focus on making perfect espresso drinks using only premium quality beans from all over the world, Koffiehuis Amsterdam continues to uphold traditional values for customer service and quality control that have made them one of Holland’s most successful small businesses. Today, Koffiehuis Amsterdam offers customers more than just great espresso drinks; they also offer a unique shopping experience that takes its time exploring different European tobacco products including cigars, cigarettes and pastries from around the continent. Whether you’re looking for something new to try or want something special just for yourself, Koffiehuis Amsterdam has it all!

Nederland, Texas is home to one of the largest artisan coffee scenes in the United States. The town has been known for its high-quality coffee beans and roasted products since the 1800s. Today, Nederland is a center of coffee appreciation and learning, with many cafes and businesses offering their own unique blends and styles of coffee.
Nederland is a small town located in the heart of Texas. The population was 2,569 at the 2010 census and is growing rapidly. Nederland has a rich history that dates back to the days when it was part of Mexico. After years of turmoil and war, Nederland became an American colony in 1845. Over time, the town’s economy shifted from agriculture to service industry; however, it retains its agricultural roots today. Nederland’s location makes it an ideal place to grow rice and other grains. The town also has a number of businesses that produce goods for local markets or export to other parts of the United States. These businesses include: four grocery stores, two restaurants, a barber shop, and several printing presses. In addition, there are several churches and schools in Nederland that serve as landmarks for the community. The people of Nederland are friendly and welcoming - an attribute that contributes to its strong sense of community spirit. They have put their hearts into creating this wonderful community and they are determined to keep it that way!
As the coffee industry developed over time, so too did the methods and equipment used to produce it. One of the earliest examples of artisan coffee production was dating back to 1624 when a group of Portuguese Jews began brewing their own beans in their synagogue. This process involved selecting and roasting specific beans on site, which gave rise to the term “artisanal” coffee. The first true artisanal coffee was produced in 1847 by Italian immigrants who began roasted and brewed their own beans in their homes. Over time, other countries followed suit, with more and more people beginning to enjoy artisanal coffee for its unique flavor and quality. Today, there are many different types of artisan coffee available on store shelves, all of which have something unique and special about them. Some of these coffees areOrigin Coffee Co., Guatemalan Decaf Costa Rican Robusto; Peet's Coffee Dutchobee Island Pecan Shredded Blonde; Four Barrel Coffee Ethiopian Blue Laced Tumeric; Columbia Valley Coffee Bean Company Columbian Dark Roast; Bodega de Oro White Chocolate Macadamia Nut Stout). Each producer offers a unique flavor profile that can only be found at those locations or through special order. In addition to this variety, many small-batch roasters also offer excellent artisanal coffees that you may not find elsewhere. The history of artisan coffee is fascinating as it provides an insight into how our cultural definition of what constitutes a good cup ofJava has changed over time. For example, in the 1800s most Europeans thought Java should be served hot with lots of sugar added because this is how they knew how Java tasted (and still does today). However, after tasting some real Java from Indonesia during my travels I realized that this wasn't really true—the taste was much richer and fuller-bodied than anything I've ever experienced before! Today's European tourists mostly go for Indonesian/ Malaysian style Coffees instead because they think it tastes better that way (although sometimes you can find some REALLY great java here!). All things considered, it's clear that there are many different styles and flavors out there worthy of your discovery! If you're curious about what all those different types OF artisanal coffee might have in common (esides being delicious!), then definitely check out someof my earlier posts on this topic: From Bean To Cup: A History Of Artisan Coffee
The first coffee beans were roasted by the ancient Egyptians in about 3000 BC. In 1795, French trader Pierre-Jacques Conte imported a shipment of Arabica beans from Sulawesi, Indonesia. The first espresso machine was built by Angelo Dempster in 1814.
The Dutch colony of Nederland, Texas was established in 1836. The land that now makes up the state of Texas was acquired from the Mexican government by the Dutch in 1821. The first European settlers arrived in early 1836, and within a year, the town of Eustace had been founded. In 1840, the area that would later become Texas was organized as a separate Mexican province named Coahuila y Tejas. When Mexico lost its status as a federal republic after the Mexican-American War in 1848, Nederland became part of what is now Texas. Texans were drawn to this new land because it offered ample possibilities for agriculture and ranching. The climate was ideal for growing crops and cattle, and there were many rivers and creeks to exploit for water resources. In addition, Nederland’s location made it an ideal place to build railroads and connect other parts of Mexico with Texan markets. This helped give Texans access to goods and services unavailable to them elsewhere in Mexico. Nederland experienced rapid growth during its initial years – both economically and politically. By 1840, there were over 1,000 people living in the town of Eustace alone; by 1850, this number had swollen to 3,000+. The towns surrounding Eustace quickly developed into hubs of trade and commerce; by 1860, Nederland had become one of the most important shipping points on the Texan Gulf Coast. It also became an important center for political activity; by 1870, Eustace had elected five representatives to local government]. Despite these advantages], however, tensions continued to simmer between Dutch colonists and Mexicans throughout much of this period. One incidentstand out from this time: On November 16th 1871*, Mexicano rebels attacked aDutch Reformed church near present-day Dripping Springs*. Aftermath saw large numbersof Dutch colonists killed or wounded*, whileMexicans took control of much of central Texas*]. In 1872*, following further tension between Dutch colonists and Mexicano rebels*, Governor John Hance called for military assistance from neighboring Arkansas.* At this point*], violence escalated rapidly*: on January 15th *>, Texans fought their way past rebel lines at Karnes Creek*], leadingto one death (and several injuries)*. Three weeks later(*), another bloody battle ensued when Texan forces tried To retake San Antonio*. Following another costly skirmish*], Hance ordered all outta Kansas City *. Simultaneously*, troops were being sent southward towards Corpus Christi *. Ultimately (*), only three men - including two farmers - escaped alive across Buffalo Bayou*). Shortly thereafterHance resigned his office due to ill health*. As governor designate Van Zandt assumed leadership over Nederland *. Van Zandt immediately began trying to rebuild order within Nederland *>. He announced plans for a school system which would be modeled after those found inTexas', erected new buildings (), started repairs on existing ones (), launched a campaign against prostitution () [*], instituted regulations governingthe conductof Indians () [*], introduced criminal penalties for theft (), outlawed polygamy (), discouraged gambling () [*]) And he also worked hardTo secure support from local businesses through economic development projects (). During Van Zandt’s administration*, progress was made Toward reconciling differences between Dutch colonists & Mexican natives *]. However., some elementswithinNetherlands still harbored resentment towards Mexicans*)]. In 1886*, following decades of increasingly acrimonious politics between English-speaking Texans & Spanish-speaking Mexicans*, disturbances erupted again aroundEustace*. A seriesOf gunfights followedwhich led tobuildup around 25 sworn officers [] []]. Over 100 citizenswere injuredduring these skirmishes]]. After several days Of gunplayAnd violence][ ], VanZandt called offthe action]}. Althoughthis episode did not leadto any more serious outbreaks Between English speakers & Hispanics][ ], it did serve as a catalystFor increased attentionbeing paid ToNetherlands)*]). In 1890+, followinganother series Of gunfights AcrossEustace][ ], Governor James Lubbock announced plans For annexation forcolonialist Netherlands.*]), but these proposals met with resistancefromEnglish speakers]]).Lubbock eventually withdrew his proposal after receiving strong opposition From both Native Americans (& Hispanic settlers) AND local business owners ].During Lubbock’s administration,[ ], progress wasmade Toward reconciling differences between Dutch colonists & Mexican natives *]; however., some elementswithinNetherlands still harbored resentment towards Mexicans*))]. In 1896,[ ], following yet another seriesOf gunfights AroundEustace][ ],Governor Arthur Bancroft announced plansFor annexation forcolonialist Netherlands.]]), but these proposals met with resistanceFrom English speakers]]).Bancroft eventually withdrew his proposal after receiving strong opposition From both Native Americans (& Hispanic settlers) AND local business owners ].During Bancroft’s administration[ ],progress wasmade Toward reconciling differences between Dutch colonists & Mexican natives *]; however., some elementswithinNetherlands still harbored resentment towards Mexicans*))]. Today,, much like then,[ ] there is continuing resentment among certain sections of Anglo Saxon Protestants Towards Spanish speaking immigrants who have settledin formerly Republican Texassuch as Latinos *)]).
In 1836, the Republic of Texas was founded by Texans who fled to Mexico after the Mexican-American War. In 1845, the Republic of Texas passed a bill stating that all citizens were to be Hispanic or mulatto. This caused many white Texans to leave the state and form new states in what is now southwestern United States. The Texian population naturally dwindled as these people left, leaving behind a predominantly black community.
