Nacogdoches, Texas is a town in Unincorporated Haskell County, Texas, United States. The population was 944 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land, TX Metropolitan Statistical Area. Nacogdoches is located on FM 1960 east of downtown and on the banks of the Neches River. Nacogee ( Creek) was named for a small creek that flows through Nacogee Prairie near present day Lumberton. Indian traders first came to this area in 1836 when they discovered rich oil shale deposits in what is now eastbound US Highway 59 south of present day Nacogee Lake. They named their new village after Nagochee creek which they found nearby. At that time it was thought there were no Native Americans living hereabouts as only white men knew about these resources! The first post office opened in 1849 and was called Nagochee; however, by 1860 it had been renamed Nacogdoches because its original landowner, Colonel Nathaniel Nagochee, had donated 7 miles (11 km) of xmlstrated road from his rancho de la Garza to help bring settlers to this area from eastern Texas. The town grew rapidly due to the fact that natural gas discoveries began occurring here in 1870 and railroad construction started soon thereafter bringing people and goods directly into town from all over East Texas! In 1916 an Act of Congress designated Nacogdoches as an independent city! This designation made it possible for citizens to vote without having to leave their homes; furthermore, this also allowed for much development within the city limits including the erection of a jail and other municipal buildings not available elsewhere! In 1929 segregationist forces tried unsuccessfully to secede from Houston while still claiming jurisdiction over parts of East Texas; therefore, when World War II began most residents returned home except for a few who remained behind in support of their local Axis allies! As part of efforts towards urban renewal early in the 21st century many businesses closed or were moved out entirely as federal funds became available to municipalities across America under President George W Bush’s “stimulus” programs designed primarily at bolstering job growth within our economy rather than social welfare costs associated with traditional government functions such as education and health care! Consequently, even though many businesses have reopened since then numerous Main Street storefronts remain boarded up or empty – one could easily walk down any given alleyway in town today and find at least one business closedtered more than 25 years ago!!!
