Nacogdoches, Texas is a small town in the U.S. state of Texas that is located about 25 miles west of Houston and about 35 miles east of Dallas. The population was 1,691 at the 2010 census. Nacogdoches is part of theHouston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land metropolitan area. Nacogdoches was chartered in 1853 as a post office by James W. Robertson, who named it for his father-in-law, Nicholas Nacogdoches (1796–1858). A refineries were built near Nacogdoches during World War II but were destroyed by bombing raids; nacre brick refinery remains standing today as an example of prewar tankage architecture within the city limits only slightly modified since its construction more than 60 years ago: four stories high with a large crisscrossing earthen ramp between two flights of concrete steps leading up to an octagonal loading dock on top which supported eight giant tankers at once while they processed crude oil products into finished products such as gasoline and kerosene. It was built in 1902 by John Fenton and his wife Anna Hinton Fenton. It served as an important home until it was destroyed by fire in 1978. The other notable structure in Nacogdoches is First Baptist Church which dates back to 1888 and seats 350 people inside and out with an attached garage used for services since 1951. The church also features one of the earliest air conditioning systems in Texas when it was installed in 1935. It also played an important role during Hurricane Ike when its roof leaked so water could be pumped into it through hoses to keep people cool before lunchtime instead of having them wait outside for hours like many other churches did that day .
