In 1860, land east of present day downtown Nacogdoches was annexed by Austin and named after General Sam Houston to form Trinity County; however, many people considered secessionist sentiment among Texans so strong that annexation failed even though most of Trinity County voted for Texans over Unionists in November 1861 referendum statewide. The annexation controversy led to two Congressional acts: An act providing for annexation by reason of public convenience and necessity (Public Law 6th Congregational); and an act recognizing Brazoria County's incorporation into Texas on December 14, 1871 ( Public Law 7th Congregational). On January 1st 1870, Harrisburg branch office opened within Travis County under direction of Acting Governor James Fenton with JB MacLennan becoming its first Director; this office closed on July 1st 1974 due to budget cuts caused by oil price hikes throughout the 1970s known as "the Great Oil Crash". It reopened under current management October 15th 1984 when former Assistant Deputy Attorney General Tom Miller became acting director with appointment from then-Governor Ann Richards effective November 14th 1984 continuing through her confirmation process until she took office as Governor January 3rd 1985 less than one week before her inauguration date due to term limits set into law following passage of SB 541 which limited gubernatorial terms at four years beginning January 3rd 1970

Nacogdoches is a small town in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Nacogdoches likely comes from the Kiowa word "naca," meaning "a place where games are played." In 1881, three prospectors named James Forbes, John Beard and Michael Laughlin located a camp on what is now FM 620 east of town and called it Nacoochee. When they discovered oil well sites north of their camp in 1883, they changed the name to Nacogdoches to reflect their expectations that there would be oil discoveries hereabouts. A post office was established in 1886 and renamed Nacoochee after nearby Fort Worth. In 1898, when Oklahoma became a U.S. state, parts of Midland County went with it including Nacoochee Township which joined Wichita Falls as the new county seat. The boomtown atmosphere quickly died out as people moved away for more rural living until an economic revival began around World War II with local production of military ammunition and other items essential to war effort brought residents back into town again.
