Nacogdoches, Texas is a city in Texas, United States. It is the county seat of Nacogdoches County. The population was 539 at the 2010 census. The name is derived from the Kiowa word "naghta" meaning "place to sleep." The first European settlement in what is now Nacogdoches County was made by Spanish colonists in 1821 when they founded Pecos Rancho de la Bahia de los Tejas. In 1836, land grants were given to James Mays and others who organized what became known as the Wichita Baptist Convention. In 1840, following the Mexican-American War, Mexico ceded all of New Mexico east of Rio Grande to America under Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. This included Nacogdoches County. In 1886–87, local entrepreneurs built a network of railroad lines that allowed goods and people to move quicker and easier than ever before through central Texas with its rich cattle herds and various agricultural products. Slaughter had been born near present-day Lubbock, TX in 1824. In 1840, he married Jennie McCoy and they began to farm in what is today known as Slaughter Ranch. The grasslands that are now downtown Nacogdoches were first developed as part of this ranching operation.
