Nacogdoches has a rich history dating back to 1849 when it was founded as a trading post on the Trinity River by General Edward Kilpatrick and his troops during their legendary Texan Campaigns. In 1860, following Mexican annexation of Texas, Nacogdoches became part of Johnston County and then later Hudspeth County until it became an independent township on December 12th 1861. On February 9th 1865, Confederate Major General Jubal Early attacked Santa Anna’s army near here while retreating from Balaclava Heights; this event is now commemorated by a annual Fourth of July parade through town streets named for General Early and Lieutenant Colonel JF Rankin (1863-1948), officer in charge of rearguard action that day. Nacogdoches, Texas is a small town located in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex in north central Texas. The population was 7,799 at the 2010 census. Nacogdoches has been inhabited by Native Americans for over two centuries. The first European settlers arrived in 1827 and named the area "Nacoochee", after a nearby creek. In 1836, General Sam Houston erected a fort at Nacoochee Creek to protect his cattle from Indians. The fort served as Houston's headquarters during the Mexican-American War and was also used as a prison until 1840. After annexation of New Mexico by Mexico in 1848, Nacogdochees began to purchase land east of the Trinity River from Mexican traders and farmers. By 1860, most of what is now Nacogdoches had been developed, with only some scattered ranching remaining on the eastern edge of town. In 1861, local resident Johnnie Bowen organized an agricultural society known as the Cotton Ginners' Union (Cotton Ginners' Union) to promote cotton farming in central Texas. In 1865, Bowen became president of the new Texas Federation of Labor (TFL), which later became AFL-CIO. As part of TFL's strategy to expand its influence throughout Texas, Bowen founded and chaired several regional organizations includingTexans for Democratic Institutions (TDI), which aimed to improve party registration and electioneering opportunities for Texan Democrats; and Texans for Republican Institutions (TRI), which aimed to increase voter turnout among Republicans statewide. In 1903, when Jack Waddell became mayor of Dallas following the death of Mayor James Kenedy, Waddell appointed Nacogdoches native George Mann as his deputy mayor responsible for all city government activities within Nacogdoches limits – an arrangement that continued until Mann's retirement in 1938. During World War II, many teenage boys enlisted in local military units or underwent basic training at nearby Fort Worth Army Air Field (FORT WORTH AAF). Many men who enlisted here stayed behind after war ended and formed what is known today as "The Buffs" or "Nacoochee Boys." These young men helped rebuild NAACOGDOCHES after World War II; they raised money for veterans' benefits through dances and other events around town; built homes for themselves and their families; cooked meals on open fires during winter months; ran errands for their unit commanders;and participated actively in community projects such as building roads or renovating buildings
