Murphy, Texas is a small town in Archer County, Texas, United States. The population was 713 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita Falls metropolitan Statistical Area. The Murphy post office opened on December 16, 1879, and closed on March 14, 1997. The first resident to be born in Murphy was John H. Gross in 1907. Murphy has been a stop on the Underground Railroad for many years because of its strategic position as a crossroads connecting Archer County with other parts of the Lone Star State. In addition to its role as a stop on the Underground Railroad, Murphy also served as an early center for cattle drives and agriculture due to its fertile soil and ample rainfall. Today, Murphy retains much of its historic architecture including several churches dating back to the 1800s as well as two schools (one high school and one junior college), several businesses (including two gas stations), and a few farmhouses that remain standing today. The history of Murphy starts with Dutch settlers who arrived in 1795 along what is now Highway 618 near present day Mount Pleasant Road. A year later they founded a community called "New Amsterdam" which stands today adjacent to Watertown off FM 3596 just east of Interstate 35W exit 352B (exit 11). New Amsterdam was abandoned after only six months when floodwaters destroyed most of the village's structures and property around October 1797 by means unknown although it is thought that water from nearby Lake Neches caused extensive damage during that particular event known locally as "the Great Neches Flood." From this event until 1847 there were no permanent residents or pioneers living within what is now Archer County so development proceeded slowly or not at all until arrive German immigrants following AmericanRevolution began moving into central TX in search for land westward expansion in what became known as the Land Cattle Drive Era beginning with Josef Karras established rancho de las milpas nearpresent day Brownwood prior to November 1st 1846 when he sold his holdings plus interest therein to George Poguey becoming one of first Anglo-American settlers located within present day Wichita Falls limits where he built his home still existing today across from Wichita Falls High School on Park Avenue facing northwest - later conversion into apartments/condo complex before being designated historical landmark status by city ordinance circa 1974 . Karras family remains active in business activities currently running their Rancho de las Milpas enterprise providing education/research services throughout southeast TX which includes portions of Webb City & Greenville Counties

Murphy, Texas is a town in Tyler County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,531 at the 2010 census. Murphy is one of the most significant historic towns in Tyler County and has been home to many milestones in its history. The first settlers in Murphy were parents of Michael Cavanaugh and his wife Margaret who came overland from Illinois on October 5, 1836. They named their new settlement after John Murphy who had died eight months earlier while traveling through the area with his family. The first settler to arrive in what is now Murphy was James McCann who arrived on July 10th, 1837. He initially built a log cabin on the current site of the old post office which he named "New Hope". In 1839 the original courthouse and jail were built withincepts of present day downtown Murphy by J.T. Laughlin and Wm Hitebaugh. These two individuals are considered founders of the town as they laid out all of its streets and laid out its gridiron plat for future development which still remains today. In 1840-1841 Major General Zachariah Taylor fought a pitched battle against Mexican forces at San Jacinto River nearpresent day Hearne County seat of Quanah; this event is often cited as the beginning of America's War for Independence which lasted three years and ended with Mexico's victory over American forces at Chapultepec Creek on April 16th, 1846

The area that is now Murphy was first explored by the Comanche and Kiowa people, who named it after their leader, the Apache Chief Geronimo. After the Mexican-American War, the United States took over most of Mexico, so Murphy became part of Texas. In 1881, President James K. Polk established Webb County in what is now eastern Webb County and gave it to John Murphy for Rancho Verde de los Corderos de la Mesa de Texcoco. The land on which Murphy later built his home was acquired from Manuel Ruiz in 1907 when he bought Rancho Rinconada from John A. Cooke for $1 million dollars.
