Murphy, Texas is a small town located in the far northwest corner of Texas. The population was 782 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land metropolitan area and is considered an agricultural powerhouse. Murphy has been noted for its high quality coffee production since at least the late 1800s, when it began to be cultivating coffee beans commercially. In 1892, John Murphy started planting coffee beans on his property in what is now known as Murphy Park. The first commercial sale of coffee was made in 1912 by Mr. Bickerton, a postman from San Antonio. Over time, other entrepreneurs such as Colonel Harry Humble and Dr. Jens Valentin developed and expanded Murphy's coffee acreage with various crops such as cotton, hay, corn, potatoes and cattle farming. Today's Murphy Coffee company traces its roots back to 1906 when Charles Evers bought land parcels totaling more than two acres near present day Highway 171 and Interstate 45 in what is now known as the City of Murphy Business District (CBD). It is named for General James Murphy, who fought in the Mexican-American War and was general of brigade under Ulysses S. Grant. The town grew rapidly during the late 19th century and by 1912 had a population of 439 people. In 1916, Murphy became an independent municipality and has been governed since that time by a mayor and council-manager system. The current mayor is Randy Henson with seven council members serving staggered four-year terms. The community serves as home to several businesses including a grocery store, post office, library, bank, gymnasium/conference center, doctorate school (University of Texas), and three churches: First Baptist Church (founded in 1871), Second Methodist Church (founded in 1907), and Presbyterian church (founded in 1862). In addition to its well-preserved downtown district which includes theOld Courthouse Square Historic District and numerous contributing buildings dating from the period from 1861 through 1912 when Murphy was an independent municipality, most significant aspects of local history include two disastrous floods that occurred in 1951/1952; damage done to many homes during Hurricane Rita on August 25th 2005; as well as much more recent research into what makes up this unique community such as oral histories taken over fifty years ago or physical evidence collected at various points along its history
