Murphy, Texas was one of the original U.S.Army units activated on December 12th, 1861. The Murphy Volunteer Infantry Regiment was originally organized as the 1st Battalion, 9th Cavalry Regiment and after three months of training at Fort Worth Army Depot Company C under the command of Colonel John B. Floyd arrived in Saline County to take up their present location on October 25th, 1862. On January 18th 1863 they were redesignated as the 3rd Battalion, 9th Cavalry Regiment and participated in the Battle of Mansfield while attached to Brigadier General James Hogg's brigade which took part in that engagement. After being re-organized on February 21st with a new battalion organization Murphys continued to serve with distinction during much of the Civil War including engagements at Winchester (March 15), Gettysburg (July 14), Chickamauga (September 17) and Atlanta (December 22).
