Murphy was named after Captain John Murphy who died during the Mexican–American War in 1847. The first settler in Murphy was Wm. Hodge who arrived in 1851. There were only 8 people living there when James Fenton organized the First Baptist Church on December 7th, 1858. The first school opened up in 1861 and it taught children from grade one to 12 years old. In 1865, Jno Aiken donated land for a Methodist church which became known as First Methodist Episcopal church of Murphy (FMEC). In 1916, Mrs. Florence Ryder started a girls' high school that served grades 9 through 12 until 1949 when it merged with Pecan Grove High School to form Abilene-Aurora-Midland Community Schools District No 2 (AGMUSD 2). In 1951, two families decided to move from Wichita Falls and start their own community called "Murphy". They named their new community after Captain John Murphy who had died during the Mexican American War in 1847 and they built their new home on land donated by Jno Aiken and Mrs Florence Ryder. At that time there were only 8 residents living in Murphy but within 10 years there had grown to over 100 people with more than 30 businesses including 5 stores and 3 churches! By 1960, there were over 150 people living in Murphy with over 50 businesses! The growth of Murphysville led to an increase of infrastructure such as roads, schools, churches and fire departments!
