The history of the navy in Mount Pleasant, Texas dates back to 1881. The first naval unit stationed in the town was the USS Constitution, a ship that served as the harbor defense for Fort Worth. In 1912, the navy built USS Quincy (SS-215), which became one of the most popular warships in service during World War I. The USS Lexington (CV-4) and USS Nishigawa (IJN-836) were also constructed in Mount Pleasant. In 1945, when World War II began, Mount Pleasant had a population of just over 2,000 people. By 1948, it had grown to over 10,000 people and by 1951 it had reached 15,000 people. A total of 154 ships have been commissioned at this port since its inception. The majority of these vessels were commissioned into the navy during World War II; however there have also been a few boats commissioned into naval service since then that have served in other countries such as Taiwan and Japan. Throughout its history, Mount Pleasant has been an important center for naval activity throughout Texas and beyond. Mount Pleasant is a town in southern Travis County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,611 at the 2010 census. The Mount Pleasant community began as a wagon Bed and Breakfast operation in 1894 by two sisters, Maybelle and Nellie Bird. Passenger trains stopped at the depot on the edge of town on their way to Austin. By 1922, the Bird sisters had built a large frame house on Main Street which they continued to operate until their death in 1925. In that year, their youngest sister became Mrs. Harry Laddick who operated the business until her death in 1958. In 1954, Mrs. Laddick's husband John Fenton purchased the property which he later donated to Mount Pleasant Community School District No 2 for use as a high school campus. The first school building was completed in 1957 and served as the school mascot for many years - The Hornets (a reference to nearby Hornsby). In 1984-85, local residents developed what is now known as "The Gables" development south of Highway 183 near I-10. This project included new housing developments north of I-10 and west of Highway 183 including an open air shopping mall with several restaurants and numerous small businesses located within easy walking distance of each other

In 1841, Congress designated HMS “Hornet” as the first American warship to be built under the Age of Sail program and she made her maiden voyage in 1849. She served as Flagship of the Pacific Squadron during World War II and became one of America’s most famous warships after her involvement in The Battle of Midway (1945). After World War II, she underwent a number of revisions and modernization projects that culminated in her retirement from service in 1972. She is now preserved at NAS Pensacola, Florida, where she remains a museum ship serving as an inspiration for future sailors and current Naval vessels alike

Mount Pleasant was founded in 1879 by John Gaston and his wife Elizabeth and grew to be a small town with a population of around 100 people by 1905. The first post office in Mount Pleasant was established in 1881. In 1907, the name of the town changed to Mountain View after its founder's ranch became available for purchase on the mountain near present-day Mountain View Elementary School. The growth of Fort Worth and Dallas led to an increase in traffic through Mtpleasant and its lack of public transportation led to heavy reliance on cars for commuting purposes until buses were introduced in the early 1960s when Mtpleasant had two bus lines that served both towns. After World War II, there was an influx of Japanese Americans who worked at nearby Lockheed Aircraft plants and their children attended schools within walking distance of their homes which gave impetus for more development around school boundaries and also encouraged more shopping into downtown Mtpleasant which had been developed as part of an expanded shopping mall operations that included three department stores as well as a movie theater complex that replaced what had been called "the poor farm." By 1970, there were over 150 businesses operating within one mile radius of downtown Mtpleasant with 3 major entertainment complexes including Six Flags Over Texas (now known as AT&T Park) just outside city limits while other smaller businesses dotted the periphery looking out upon Interstate 10 where they could sell their products directly or service customers from inside business buildings without having to leave their property. As Shopping Mall Operations began ToWthout Hope Of Succeeding Choking Softly Preoccupied Withexpanded Development Downtown And Milking Flood Of Tax Dollars For Unnecessary Projects Outside Metro Area Growth Rates Quickly Began To Decline When New Businesses Opened Up Close To Their Neighborhoods Facing Same expenses But Not getting The same economic return On Investment They Had Back At Home So A backlash Against expanding malls began Which Led To Abandonment Of Downtown Mtpleasant By More Than Half The Population By 1990 As New Businesses Entered And Buses Became Obsolete
