Mount Pleasant is a small town located in Tarrant County, Texas, United States. The population was 914 at the 2010 census. Mount Pleasant is part of the Fort Worth–Arlington Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is named after General Edmund Randolph (1775-1848), an American general and politician who served in the Mexican-American War and as Minister to Russia. Mount Pleasant began as a modest settlement on a remote spur of the Little Round Top mountain range some 12 miles east of what is now Fort Worth. The first permanent settler was John Beattie, who arrived in 1836. Beattie's family ran a trading post near present-day Mount Pleasant for several years before moving to Medina County in 1840. In 1847, settlers from nearby Arlington formed the Village of Arlington Heights to provide social and economic stability within their limits. In 1860, Arlington Heights incorporated as a city; Mountpleasant became its second community. The peak of Mount Pleasant's development came during the late 19th century when railroads improved transportation options and new industry sprung up around downtown: banking, grocery stores, manufacturing plants and other businesses attracted people to this growing townspeople band together to support local newspapers, build churches and contribute financially to various civic causes. By 1900, Mountpleasant had more than 1,000 residents; by 1910 it had reached 2,000 with 400 businesses operating in downtown alone (). A series of devastating fires swept through Mtpleasant on November 8th 1913 destroying most of downtown including much important cultural heritage such as churches and schools that had been built over many years; only two blocks of original Downtown were ever rebuilt (the Castleton Building still stands). One could read about this destruction throughout much of Dallas/Fort Worth during those days but never saw anything like it firsthand until one moved there in recent decades... Only since Katrina struck did one really get an understanding not just how destructive these types fires can be but also HOW quickly rebuilding can happen if you're not prepared for it!
