Mount Pleasant was a small town in Coleman County, Texas, United States. The community was founded in 1892 by farmers and their families who had come from nearby Fort Worth. The town grew rapidly due to the railroad and other businesses that were established there. By 1912, Mount Pleasant had a population of approximately 150 people. In 1915, the name of the town was changed to Prairie View after Prairie View A&M University (later Prairie View University). The towns growth stopped when World War I began and the economy crashed. Mount Pleasant's population decreased to about 10 people by 1924. However, it continued to decline until its final disappearance in the 1970s. There is evidence that Mountpleasant may have been destroyed in a fire in 1965 but this has yet to be confirmed. Today, there is only one building remaining from early Mountpleasant - the gymnasium at Prairie View A&M University which house classes and offices for both students and faculty members today.
In 1875, Mount Pleasant was founded by brothers James and John G. Hardin. The Hardins were farmers who had moved to the area from Paint Rock, Texas. In 1876, the Hardins built a cabin on the mountain and started to farm their land. They also built a mill which became one of the early mills in Mount Pleasant. By 1890, theHardins had acquired some land east of their cabin and started to grow crops and process lumber. In 1912, they bought more acreage in Mount Pleasant and began to build a home for themselves and their families. The Hardins’ home is still standing today and is a Heritage Village landmark.
