In 1903, an organization called "The Ladies Auxiliary for Improvement and beautification of the Poor" (LAPI) was organized to promote better living conditions for low-income residents in Dallas County; LAPI soon became known as "The Municipal League." By 1926, when it merged with another municipal league called "Dallas Federation," both organizations had developed a program which aimed to improve public sanitation facilities and provide services such as trash collection and water supply for low-income residents across Dallas County. In 1927, Mayor JT Hegar proposed that the city name its new section of town—Polkville—in honor of General James K. Polk because he had been so instrumental in improving sanitation and water supplies within Dallas County during his time as president between 1848 and 1853; the proposal was approved by then–Mayor Harry Browne andrafted into city ordinances that year. The city is home to many important historical buildings, including the old Fort Worth Stockade, which served as headquarters for Ulysses S. Grant during his time as Army Secretary; Independence Hall; and the first public library in Texas. The city also contains several museums, including the Texas State Museum andthe Lamar County Courthouse. One of America's most significant battles occurred here when Confederate General Robert E Quantrill attacked Union forces at Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861. After successfully defending themselves against repeated attacks from Confederate forces over several days, Union troops surrendered at this site. This event helped lead to the secession ofTexas from the United States and later led to Bloody Sunday in Dallas when Confederate soldiers took up arms against Federal troops who were trying to disperse a peaceful rally protesting Reconstruction policies in that city
On July 16, 1836, the Republic of Texas was founded by Andrew Johnson. The town of Missouri City was named in honor of General Sam Houston. On October 15, 1840, the first post office in Missouri City was opened. In 1845, a railroad station was built and became known as "The Junction". A cotton gin and stockyards were also built in this time period. In 1853, Congress passed the Kansas-Nebraska Act which allowed for slavery to be legalized in Kansas but not Nebraska. This caused a great stir in Missouri City because many people felt that they had been wronged by Congress. On November 3, 1854, General James Hogg united all of Texas under one banner and announced that Missouri City would become the capital of Texas. The city's population increased rapidly during this time and soon there were schools, churches and businesses located within its boundaries
