In 1853, General James K. Polk awarded a contract to the Flamingo Hotel Company to provide military transportation services between Polk's presidential campaign headquarters and Fort Worth. The Flamingo Hotel Company became one of the largest suppliers of military transportation in America during the 1850s and 1860s. In 1871, Ulysses S. Grant purchased land northeast of Missouri City and founded Camp Grant Army Depot on it. After World War I ended, Camp Grant served as an armory and storage facility for artillery ammunition and other supplies for the U.S.Army until its closure in 1936. From 1937-1945, Camp Grant was used as a training ground for Japanese soldiers during World War II by the United States Army Forces Far East (USAFFE). During World War II, Camp Grant also served as an army airfield providing landing strips for B-24 bombers and P-51 Mustang fighters from nearby Dowling Field Air Force Base. After World War II, Camp Grant reverted to its original name: Missouri City Army Depot Site #1 (later renamed Missouri City National Guard Armory Site #1). It remained an army depot until its closure in 1984. The camp site is now home to the MOCC National Guard Armory Complex which opened in 1987 on donated land adjacent to the former arsenal complex atCamp Grant Army Depot Site #1

That same year, the Kansas–Texas Railway built a branch line south from Farmers Branch to reach Missouri City for transportation purposes only and did not connect it to Interstate 10 until 1915 when it became part of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex network; as such, it remains one of only two cities in Texas without an interstate highway connection (the other being McAllen). In 1912, citizens voted to change their name from “Farmers Branch” to “Missouri City” after annexation into New York State had created more than 50 similar towns throughout Texas with similar names (eager residents had petitioned for years before this change). In 1945, Texaco Inc., which merged with Mobil Oil Company to become ExxonMobil Corporation announced plans for an oil refinery within striking distance of downtown MOCCITY – putting an end to decades-long efforts by local businesses and citizens to keep this coveted property out ofTexaco hands and within reach of residents instead! After much outcry by locals and Texaco employees alike – including some matches made during outdoor Burning Man festival celebrations right up againstMOCCITY walls just weeks prior – Texaco eventually agreed to sell its KOA holdings adjacent to MOCCITY for $16 million cash plus all associated infrastructure (!!) making MoCCITY finally independence day!
