The Missouri City Army Post was founded in 1853 as the First Regiment of Texas Volunteers. The post served as a garrison for Fort Davis, TX from 1853-1857, and then as an artillery battery at San Antonio, TX from 1857-1859. In 1861, the 1st Texas Infantry was organized at Fort Worth and mustered into service under the command of General Sam Houston. On November 16th, 1861, Confederate Brigadier General John C. Frémont ordered Major General James Hogg to move his army through Texarkana on their way to invade Missouri City. Hogg's army reached camp on October 26th and began construction of a road between Texarkana and Carthage that would allow them to march unopposed towards Missouri City. However, on November 2nd Confederate Brigadier General Thomas Jealous ordered Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter's naval detachment to blockadeTexarkana harbor while he crossed the Red River near present day Wichita Falls with 4 transports carrying steamboats filled with troops and ammunition. Commodore Perry arrived at Galveston on October 30th with orders to open hostilities by sailing north along the Texas coast and attacking any ships discovered off Texarkana Bayou about December 5th or 6th. On December 3rd Commodore Perry sailed his squadron up bayou Brazos parallel to Texarkana where he found three Spanish warships anchored together without artillery fire in order to avoidrance by Commodore Perry who had Sealers escorting him back down the river after sighting no sign of enemy vessels since leaving Galveston a week prior! Commodore Perry boarded one of these warships (San Patricio)and demanded surrender which was given without incident! The next morning all three ships were burned by Admiral Porter's men before being taken into captivity! This event is generally considered as the beginning of Civil War Naval Warfare!!! While this episode may have been embarrassing for Commodore Perry it demonstrated that even thoughtexarkana lay within Confederate territory water could be used as a battlefield advantage!!!

The history of the Missouri City, Texas Army Garrison begins in 1861 when General Sam Houston ordered the creation of an army to protect the Republic of Texas. The original garrison consisted of only a few soldiers and officers. It was not until 1865 that the brigade was raised to a full regiment and then to a battalion. In 1881, Captain John Hogg served as Commandant for one year before his promotion to Colonel gave him command of all infantry companies in the garrison. From 1886-1892,Captain George Epps led the artillery company at Fort Worth during World War I before becoming Commandant for Infantry Companies No. 2 (1915-1916) and 3 (1920-1921). By 1922, Captain John Hogg had been promoted to Major General and command of all infantry regiments in town. In 1941 Major General Hogg was again appointed Commandant for Infantry Regiment No. 1 which he held until his death in 1945. After his death, Lieutenant Colonel Charles Ayer took overcommand role until 1951 when Captain Newton Withers became Commandant effective January 1st, 1952 In 1964 Congressman Lloyd Bentsen established the Texas Army National Guard District #1 headquartered in New Orleans with Ft Hood as its primary installation In 1988 Lt Col Jerry Hardesty assumed command from Lt Col Charles Ayer
Most people know Missouri City, Texas as the birthplace of Texan author and historian Allan Nevins. But the town also has a rich history that can be explored through its museums, restaurants, and nightlife. The first European settlers in Missouri City were Frenchmen who came overland from Louisiana in 1804. They named their new settlement after St. Louis, which they had seen on their travels. The French built a trading post here and started to cultivate land. In 1836, Mexico won independence from Spain and became an independent country called Mexico State. Mexican nationals who lived in Texas began to arrive in large numbers and some of these newcomers decided to settle in what is now Missouri City. In 1839, the town's first school was opened up by local residents with help from subscriptions raised by members of the Methodist Church. As the years went on, more Texans arrived and additions were made to the community: In 1849, two churches were erected; one for Methodists and one for Presbyterians; in 1860, a Masonic Lodge was organized; in 1865 Damn Chute Gulch wasnamed after General Sam Houston; and finally, an airfield was built to support military activity during World War II here name-wise (Manning Field). In 1912, Missouri City annexed nearby Burkburnettville so that it could become more economically active because of its location at the crossroads of Interstates 35 & 611A. This move allowed for expanded shopping opportunities as well as increased production at Burkburnettville's Cotton Belt textile plant which operated until 1972 when it closed down due to low market demand (Burkburnettville Mills Museum). Finally annexing Burkburnettville created a central business district that continues to thrive today with several high-end restaurants including Benares Bistro (formerly The Elks Club), The Ritz Carlton Ballroom/Casino Hotel-Livestock Show Hall & Kitchen restaurant serving prime rib steak nights only ($25+) nightly since 2007 renamed The Grande Dame Buffet BarbecueHouse & Live Auctioneer booth) along with several small businesses such as A&W Root Beer distributorship located across I-635E from intermodal terminal Union Pacific Railroad tracks eastbound at Patton Avenue just past TX 17th Street intersection (& direct access off ramps LEFT onto I-635E) as well as numerous momandpop stores dotting interstate corridor providing excellent shopping opportunities today if you are looking for authentic Midwestern food culture!

In 1867, Missouri City was founded as the Rancho de la Valle by John H. White and his wife, Eliza C. White. The city was named for General George A. Smith’s home in San Antonio, Texas. Although Missouri City was small at first, it quickly became one of the most important stops on the Chisholm Trail because of its strategic location at the intersection of the Santa Fe Trail and the Austin-Mexico Road. The city's success as a trading center led to its growth over time. By 1887, Missouri City had become a thriving town with a population of approximately 50 residents. In 1899, Kansas State University (now Sam Houston State University) moved from Salina to Missouri City and began offering courses in agriculture and engineering. The university remained in Missouri City until 1925 when it relocated to Austin, Texas. The economy of Missouri City changed significantly during World War II due to wartime production demands within the munitions industry and local support for military efforts such as Operation Overlord. After the war ended, however, economic conditions deteriorated and violence increased in the city; this situation culminated in 1967 when police were called to disperse antiwar demonstrators who had taken to rooftops throughout town following a failed attempt by Ulysses S Grant Park officials to remove Confederate battle flags from several buildings in retaliation for killings perpetrated by white supremacists during protests against racial segregation
