Mission is a small town located in Hudspeth County, Texas. The community was founded in 1836 by Father José de Jesús Arguelles and the Sisters of the Good Shepherd. The original mission was built on land that is now called Red Rock Road. Missions were established throughoutTexas during the late 1800s to serve as places of religious instruction and work among Native Americans. The first church in Mission was built in 1836 on the site of what is now known as Red Rock Road. The congregation grew quickly and soon had a school, chapel, and other facilities. In 1849, Mission became an independent parish with its own bishop. In 1869, Mission also became the first county seat of Hudspeth County when it was moved from San Antonio to central Horseshoe Bayou Township . The move caused much controversy because Hudspeth County had been created only two years earlier, while San Antonio still served as the county seat. The population of Mission peaked at 1,500 in 1910 but began to decline thereafter due to various factors including World War I (1914-18), prohibition (1920-33), economic depression (1937-41), and environmental changes such as water shortages (1966-68). However, some residents remained active in local affairs until the early 2000s when they dispersed into surrounding rural communities.
In 1836, the Stephens family set out from their ranch in Mission, Texas to find a new home. On arrival in San Antonio, they found an abandoned building that served as their first house. They moved into the building and started a new life. The Stephenses would live in San Antonio for over fifty years before moving to Austin in 1875. In 1907, the Stephens family donated land to create University of Texas at Austin. The university has since grown and now includes over 100 colleges and universities across the United States and Canada.
