It was the original terminus of the Santa Fe Railroad, which became part of the Union Pacific Railroad in 1881. The coffee industry began to grow here in the late 1800s and early 1900s as farmers brought their beans from Mexico. Today Mission coffee continues to be one of the most popular types of coffee enjoyed around the world. The first coffee house in Mission was founded by George Herron and his brother-in-law Sam Hutton in 1907. They served roasted coffee and iced tea from a small shop on Main Street. In 1928, Mr. Herron opened his own café called "Herron's Coffee House." The business grew rapidly and soon had more than twenty employees working at it full time. By 1938, Mr. Herron had renamed his business "Herron's Coffee & Tea" after himself and his wife Ruth (née Hyman). Ruth ran the business until her death in 1943; then son George took over operations until he passed away in 1978. In 1957, Mrs. Bettye Floyd opened what is now known as Mission Coffee Roasters with her husband Rick Floyd as her manager/founder/co-owner (along with others including Johnny Appleseed). The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Mission were Mexican traders looking for new land to sell to Americans. In 1836, two American families, the Dalles and Smiths, set out from Portland, Oregon on horseback for what would be their final frontier foray into what is now Texas. They were seeking land grants from the Mexican government as part of an effort to acquire additional property for American settlement near San Antonio de Bexar (now Austin). After crossing the border into Mexico at Nacogdoches (near today's San Antonio), they made their way upriver through what is now Midland County before finally reaching Mission Inn on April Fool's Day 1837. Mission began as just one house—the home of Captain John Sitton—and quickly grew into a thriving community with agriculture being its mainstay economy. By 1840, there were 3 churches and 10 businesses in Mission; by 1845 it had grown to 25 churches and 350 businesses. Between 1830 and 1850, English-speaking farmers started arriving who set up shop along missions creek where they fished, hunted and gathered natural resources such as acorns and chestnuts. In 1840 Governor Fannin issued a proclamation establishing El Paso County which Included Mission; this created competition among Anglo settlers for land within Texan borders which led to social tensions that continue until the late 20th century when Anglo Texans generally accepted Mexican citizenship status quo while Mexicans continued to suffer economic exploitation by Anglo ranchers/ industry
