Mission is a small town in Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,959 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Antonio metropolitan area. Mission's history began with General Sam Houston and his army of Texans marching from Fort Bend to Gonzales on October 16, 1836 to build an outpost in what is now Hidalgo County as a safeguard against Mexica threats. Houston's Army also founded Mission San Francisco de AsÃs on November 10, 1836 as a religious center for Spanish Catholics across the border in Mexico City. The mission served as a garrison and storage depot until it was abandoned in 1845 when Mexican forces invaded Texas and destroyed most of the missions along the Rio Grande River valley. In 1850, James Wacoett established Baylor University in Mission Bayou near present-day Main Street and White Settlement Road. In 1907 Baylor merged with medical school partner (and future national headquarters) Houston Methodist Hospital to form Trinity Medical Center. In 1916 Baylor acquired Belcher Mansion on White Settlement Road to house its new School of Medicine; this building still stands today as one of the city's taller buildings. In 1920–1921 Baylor purchased land adjacent to Killeen High School for its new Medical Education Campus; construction began upon campus' dedication in 1922 and continued through 1940%. Today Belcher mansion serves as home to several graduate schools within Trinity University System including medicine, nursing & health sciences, computer science/Internet research & development, law enforcement/jurisdiction services and life sciences disciplines among others

Mission, Texas is the most recent town founded in what was once the Comanche country. The town was named after Father José de la Cruz, a missionary who arrived in 1834 and began preaching Christianity to the Comanches. In 1850, Mission was founded as an agricultural community by Mexican Americans who had come to work on the railroad. It grew quickly because of its location near Fort Worth and its access to water from the Trinity River. By 1870, Mission had a school and a hospital. In 1907, when Jesse James and his gang attacked a train convoy north of Fort Worth, the townsfolk responded with violence. This led to increased law enforcement efforts in Mission and other nearby communities. The following year, President Theodore Roosevelt visited Mission and declared it one of America’s “model cities.†In 1912, during World War I, Mission became an air base for American forces fighting in Europe. After World War I ended, many American soldiers left for home; but some stayed and started businesses in Mission. In 1957, Mayor Harry Wittenberg decided that it would be better if all of Mexico City’s citizens moved into San Antonio so that they could share one city hall (although this idea never came to be). Wittenberg also decided that San Antonio should become more like New York City – with streets named after famous people or places – so he ordered construction of a new Municipal Building (now part of South Side Ballroom) which replaced the old public buildings on Commerce Street. The first meeting of San Antonians elected their first mayor under this new system; Abner Sibley (1957-1959). On July 12th 1959 Mayor Wittenberg proposed that San Antonio become an independent city; this proposal was approved by referendum two weeks later on August 2nd 1959! With San Antonio now an independent city we can boast our own flagrant disregard for state laws concerning incorporation/incorporation!
