Midlothian, Texas is a city in the U.S. state of Texas and the seat of Midlothian County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 722, up from 599 at the 2000 census. Midlothian is located in Mid-Texas region which has been experiencing growth in recent decades due to its proximity to Houston and Dallas. The city is home to The University of Texas at Austin (UTA), one of America's largest universities. In addition, Midlothian also has several large businesses including Dell and Home Depot as well as smaller businesses such as beauty supply store Bobbi Brown and fast food restaurant Taco Bell. The history of Midlothian began with Methodist settlers who founded a church on what would become Main Street in 1836. A post office called Elmira was established in 1839, but it closed operations within a year due to lack of residents. In 1841, John Sellers donated land for a public square that became known as Sellers Park(). In 1860, James Waddell purchased land south of Main Street for $5 per acre ($40 per km²). He named this property "Midlothian" after his home town in Scotland where he had been born eight years earlier. Waddell served as mayor of Midlothian from 1865 until 1870 when he was impeached and removed from office by then-Governor Sam Houston because he refused to pay taxes on his new land holdings near Houston. In 1872, City Councilmember James Hogg organized a group composed mostly of business owners called the "Associated Businessmen's Association" or ABC for short (). Their goal was to provide economic development opportunities for Midlothian through collective bargaining with local governments throughout Texas; this eventually led to success when they successfully lobbied for passage of legislation creating UTA in 1923 (). From that point forward, UTA’s role grew exponentially: by 1950 it accounted for 20%of all academic research conducted at TXA (it now accounts for almost 60%of all university research'). The late 1800s were characterized by physical infrastructure investment spearheaded by Mayor Harry “Hap” Davenport (), which included construction of downtown streetscape features including Market Square (), Queen Anne Drive (), Second Avenue South () and Westheimer Road (); these arterial streets helped shape postwar suburban growth patterns throughout Travis County ().
