Midlothian, Texas is a city in and the county seat of Midlothian County, Texas, United States. The population was 813 at the 2010 census. Midlothian is located in East Texas near Austin. The first humans to live in what would become Midlothian were Native American tribal groups who hunted game and gathered plants and fruits. By 1829, Anglo-American settlers had arrived in what became Midlothian from neighboring Williamson County. In 1836, the Mexican government ceded land east of the Rio Grande to Texans as part of the Alamo Treaty. As part of this treaty, Mexico agreed that all people living east of the river were white and must convert to Catholicism or be deported; these "New Mexicans" were not allowed within Spanish territory. In 1840, residents petitioned for annexation by Austin because they wanted to keep their independent municipality separate from Williamson County which was becoming increasingly populous with African Americans working on plantations nearby. On July 12, 1840,Austin granted incorporation to Midlothian Township with a population of 553 residents including 141 African Americans who had been brought over as slaves during the antebellum period. In 1845–46 local citizens formed a school committee with proposals for schools (including one built on current Third Street) but no results were achieved until Mayor James Guthrie established an elementary school in 1847 using $2,000 he received from state legislators upon passage of Senate Bill No. 985 which created public education throughout Texas A new courthouse was built in 1865 on present day Second Street West between Lamar Boulevard and Main Streets; it served as both court House and jail until 1901 when it burned down .
