Midlothian, Texas is a city in Tarrant County, Texas, United States. The population was 66,811 at the 2010 census. Midlothian was founded in 1855. Midlothian has been the county seat of Tarrant County since 1907. Midlothian is located on the Brazos River and is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. It is home to Baylor University and Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. The history of Midlothian began with its incorporation as a town on November 3, 1855 by commissioners from Fort Worth and Wichita Falls. The town was named for Colonel James Hogg, who had purchased land along the Brazos River in what is now Midlothian from Manuel Gonzalez de Armas y Castilla for $5 per acre (€0.75 per square kilometer). On October 25, 1861, during the American Civil War, Confederate General John Buford attacked Union forces under General Sterling Price at Fort Donelson outside of present-day Midlothian; these events are known as Battle of Fort Donelson. After this victory over Union forces and their retreat southward into Tennessee Valley Territory, Confederate General Robert Ewell decided to move his headquarters from Chattanooga to Corinth instead of waiting for reinforcements sent by President Abraham Lincoln; accordingly he ordered his army northward through West Virginia and Kentucky before engaging Ulysses S Grant’s Army of Northern Virginia at Antietam Creek on September 17th 1863; this event is known as Battle of Antietam Ridge. Aftermath of Battle at Gettysburg: In 1865 Union General Philip Sheridan took command of I Corps after Ulysses S Grant’s dismissal from command due to age or ill health; he planned an attack against Confederate General Braxton Bragg’s army near Chickamauga Battlefield but discovered that there were no troops available to carry out this plan so instead he advanced eastward until he reached Missionary Ridge where infantry units encountered heavy resistance while cavalry troopers distinguished themselves by galloping through enemy lines unopposed with one rider dismounting and carrying loads behind him! After which two brigades were detached under Lieutenant Colonel Arthur Hethaway and BrigadierGeneral George Armstrong Custer arrived late in support resulting in minor success although some prisoners were taken including those who had worn Federal uniforms! In total about 12000 men lost their lives during battle including 2500 officers killed or mortally wounded!!! This engagement resulted in a strategic loss for Confederates as it stopped Bragg's advance towards Atlanta whilst also allowing Sherman's army to cross Overhead Bridgehead without being engagedAlthough Braxton Bragg produced high casualty rates like 3000 killed/maimed/wounded plus 5000 captured newspaper article claims 5000 more died throughout campaignUnion casualties were much lower with around 400 dead (27% Casualties) & 507 captured overallUnion commander Philip Sheridan considered this engagement a "disaster" because it caused severe losses for both sides combined whilst also demonstrating how difficult it would be for either side to retake essentially undefended ground
