Midlothian is a city in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 823 at the 2010 census. Midlothian is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. Midlothian is located on the banks of White River and has a history dating back to 1871 when it was named "Afton". The first post office in Midlothian was established on December 6, 1871. It was renamed Afton in honor of Colonel John Afton who had been instrumental in helping to establish Wichita Falls as a Yankee town in 1867. In 1907, Afton became an incorporated municipality and annexed by Midlothian. The old white-frame buildings that remain today around Main Street were built between 1907 and 1909 as part of downtown development. In 1915, after World War I ended, Midland County voted to annex what are now Arlington Heights and Southlake Village with help from Dallas-Fort Worth Mayor Ross Barnett because they felt that these new towns would be more compatible with their downtowns than Wichita Falls or Denton which were still considered rural areas at this time. This annexation created the largest city complex west of the Mississippi River outside of Chicago - all without voter approval! The original version of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metropolitan Planning Commission's Master Plan for Dallas−Fort Worth called for only 2% growth within GreaterDallas−Houston Area (GDA) while 3% growth could be expected in adjacent counties including Midland County during its lifespan – much like what we experience today! However due to population growth within GDA plus suburban growth within Metroplex over time, adjustments were made to include even more acreage within GDA limits as well as adjoining counties – resulting in current densities near 10 million people! Downtown redevelopment continued through the 1970s and 1980s with apartment complexes being built up along Elm Street near White River; most notable being CityPlace which opened in 1978 and remains one of Metroplex' most popular destinations today. By 1990 CityPlace had become home to over 150 businesses with residential units available on two sides thereof as well as several plazas providing public views across White River into DowntownDallas − setting an example for other cities throughout Metroplex followed suit!
