The Air Force has been in existence since World War II. Serving as the country's largest air force, it is responsible for providing mobility and support to our military and civilian populations. In Midlothian, Texas, the Air Force has a long history dating back to 1942 when Midwestern fighter-bombers were sent to fight in the war against Japan. TheAAF's first airstrip in Midlothian was built on what is now FM 3684. Today, the USAF operates eleven bases in Midlothian including Stanberry AFB which serves as home to the 361st Fighter Wing and provides operational training for USAF pilots and missile controllers. Since its inception, the Air Force has bestowed many gifts upon Midland County residents. One of these gifts was an airstrip that would serve as a launching point for bombers during World War II. The located at FM 3684 became known as "Midland City Airport." In 1947, another gift was givenpron which allowed citizens of Midlothian access to air transportation within Texas while they fought in the Korean War. This airport still resides today and is used by UTMB students who attend Lone Star College Southwestern University from campus in Dallas/Fort Worth Airport (LSCU). Additionally, LSCU also uses Kirtland AFB (KADS) which is adjacent to Midland City Airport with additional runway space available for flights into Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW). Kirtland AFB currently hosts two USAF squadrons: 1ATF-5th Tactical Fighter Squadron and 466th Airlift Wing; both of which provide airlift services throughout North Texas including Arney AFB near Wichita Falls, TX; Bossier Parish Aviation Center south of Monroeville along IHN Drive; Thalia Regional Airport outside Beaumont TX; Fairchild AFB southeast of Boise ID; Udvar-Hazy Municipal Airport near Richmond VA; Seymour Johnson Field north of Raleigh NC; Robins AFB northeast of Atlanta GA; Davis-Monthan AFB AZ); Aspen Hill Resort Hotel & Conference Center near Tucson AZ) all serving primarily domestic passenger service with various international flights being conducted from various locations around Tucson – one such location being Ariz.'s Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHL).
