Midland is a city in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 153 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Midland County and has been since 1879. Midland is located in the Lone Star State on the Gulf of Mexico about 78 miles (130 km) south of Dallas and about 120 miles (190 km) east of Houston. The community that would become Midland was founded by pioneers in 1839 as a trading post on the Trinity River between San Antonio and Austin. In 1906-07, John Wesley Hardin donated land north of Main Street to make room for what would become midtown Midlanders Park. The park includes three blocks long along Elm Street from Main Street to Cedar Avenue and features such features as a pond, tennis courts, basketball court and general area that can be used for recreation or business purposes; it also contains over 20 retail stores. In 1916-17, Jack Haney donated land adjacent to his cotton gin near present day Elm Street/Highway 183 so that farmers could have access to irrigation water via a pipeline he had developed from Lubbock Caverns some 25 miles (40 km) southwest of Midlanders. This Agricultural Experiment Station remain one of America's longest continually operating agricultural research facilities up until its closure in 1978 after many years focused on horticulture research only
